I'm looking at the rates for a value in January. I see standard and Preferred.

So what is a "preferred room?" Thanks.

Preferred rooms are closer to the main building (lobby, bus, food court). The room itself is the same for both standard and preferred.

It might also have a water view (pool or lake/river) or be closer to transportation.

Lots of good info on http://www.easywdw.com/category/resorts/
Including pics and diagrams of resorts, so you can see when it's more worthwhile to pay for preferred.
But sometimes, the extra for the preferred is not worth it. For example, we stayed at POFQ many years ago. Bill insisted that we get the river/water view. I tried to convince him it wasn't worth the extra, but he insisted. So we got the water/river view and could only see the water if we walked out the door and walked to the end of the building. There was no way we could see the water from inside our room. Also, I booked a standard view at CBR, requested Martinique and got building 23 which was a very short walk to the pool, the bus stop and Old Port Royale.
