I am reading a lot about photopasses but unclear as to what they are how/why to obtain one? Someone mentioned make sure I have one for BBB....

PhotoPass is such a great service at Disney! When you get to the entrance, you'll see PhotoPass photographers there and they'll take a professional photo of you and your family. Let them know that you don't have a card yet and they'll give you one. What they do is they'll scan your card and that digital image will go on your account. You'll be able to use that card during your vacation and have as many pictures as you want taken. You can even get a card for each member of your family and combine them when you get home if you order a CD! It's really cool! Our family LOVES it!

Here's a link to more info about how they work:

Next time we go, I'm going to have to utilize this service; I've only ever seen a couple of PP photographers, though- one at the castle and one at the entrance in front of Main Street Station.

Of course, we generally go during the "off season".

So, there are a couple of different options, Just a regular Photopass is totally non-committal. You get picts taken around the park, they scan your card (which you get the first time you have a pict taken), you view the photos in the photo store or online and can order individual photos or a CD of the photos. You can add cute Disney borders to the photos on the CD, if you like.

Photopass+ is a little different. You prepay for it either by preordering (at least 14 days before your trip - they mail you a voucher to redeem at the park) for $69.99 via the link another poster listed above, or you can purchase at Disneyland for $99.99. It includes a code to order the CD of your photos for free, a CD of stock photos, and a voucher to redeem for a lanyard in the park. The lanyard allows them to add the digital files of the rides photos to you account for free and gives you the digital files/images from the character meals free also (it is valid for as many of those as you like for 14 days).

also when you go on rides that take photos, you can buy a copy of that photo or a digital download.. if you are going to buy the download version , I would advise you to go to the photo shop inside Disneyland and upgrade to a photo plus card... it will cost $99. but.

by the time you add all the photos to the card from just a normal photopass card it will amount to a lot of money.. you get home and look at the photos and like most people think oh I really like that photo.. add it to your cart and when you add it all up.. wow its a LOT of money...
with the pass plus you pay no more than the $99. or $69. if you pre paid for it 14 days before your trip.

and if you have already purchased ride digital downloads you can apply the cost of those to up grade to the photopass plus.... we did that and because we bought so many ride photos we got money back...

Does anyone know how far ahead you can purchase this? If I am buying ahead of time, how long does the pass stay good/active?

Can you still add regular photopass cards to the account? I'm thinking if our group splits up, and there's only one lanyard, we might miss some photo opportunities.

We've ordered it twice. Both times we ordered it months in advance.

You can add regular photo pass cards to the account.
