What is a good song about family to play at a funeral during a slide show?

I am so sorry for your loss.

At my funeral I would like For Good from the musical Wicked to be sung. There is a clip of it in this link. It is about how one person can make a difference in the lives of others. a common line is something about "because I knew you I have been changed for good".

I'm very sorry for your loss.

Because You Loved Me,....Celine Dion

For all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I'll be forever thankful baby
You're the one who held me up
Never let me fall
You're the one who saw me through through it all

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall
I had your love I had it all
I'm grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don't know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

You were always there for me
The tender wind that carried me
A light in the dark shining your love into my life
You've been my inspiration
Through the lies you were the truth
My world is a better place because of you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

I am so sorry for your loss.

I love the song, "I could not ask for more" by Sara Evans.

First off I am so sorry to hear about your loss.

When my dad passed we used "There You'll Be" By Faith Hill and "In My Life" By Bette Midler (she was a favorite of his but the Beatles version is great)

I'm so very sorry for your loss.

We played Randy Travis's "Love without End" while showing pictures of my BIL's family during the slideshow.

I got sent home from school one day with a shiner on my eye.
Fightin' was against the rules and it didn't matter why.
When dad got home I told that story just like I'd rehearsed.
And then stood there on those tremblin' knees and waited for the worst.

And he said, "Let me tell you a secret about a father's love,
A secret that my daddy said was just between us."
He said, "Daddies don't just love their children every now and then.
It's a love without end, amen, it's a love without end, amen."

When I became a father in the spring of '81
There was no doubt that stubborn boy was just like my father's son.
And when I thought my patience had been tested to the end,
I took my daddy's secret and I passed it on to him.

And he said, "Let me tell you a secret about a father's love,
A secret that my daddy said was just between us."
He said, "Daddies don't just love their children every now and then.
It's a love without end, amen, it's a love without end, amen."

Last night I dreamed I died and stood outside those pearly gates.
When suddenly I realized there must be some mistake.
If they know half the things I've done, they'll never let me in.
And then somewhere from the other side I heard these words again.

And he said, "Let me tell you a secret about a father's love,
A secret that my daddy said was just between us."
He said, "Daddies don't just love their children every now and then.
It's a love without end, amen, it's a love without end, amen."

I'd have to say "In My Life" by the Beatles.

Also, I am sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry... may God bless you and your family.

My son did a slide show for my aunt back in July, under the song "Wind Beneath My Wings"... it was so haunting and TRUE.

Luther Vandross has a song he wrote for his father called "Dance With My Father Again" that nearly KILLS me when I hear it. I dedicated to my Dad.

Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then

Spin me around till I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure
I was loved

If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
How I’d love, love, love to dance with my father again

When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He’d make me laugh just to comfort me, yeah, yeah
Then finally make me do just what my mama said

Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he
Would be gone from me

If I could steal one final glance
One final step, one final dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
‘Cause I’d love, love, love to dance with my father
again

Sometimes I’d listen outside her door
And I’d hear her, mama cryin’ for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me

I know I’m prayin’ for much too much
But could You send back the only man she loved
I know You don’t do it usually
But Lord, she’s dyin’ to dance with my father again
Every night I fall asleep
And this is all I ever dream.....

So sorry for your loss.

Daddy's Hands by Holly Dunn and Seein' my Father in Me by Paul Overstreet are good songs about fathers.

Depending on your beliefs, I think this song is also great.
When I get where I'm going - Brad Paisley

I know picture montages are becoming more common in our area.

:grouphug: I'm sorry for your loss.

I've done a few of these and used many of the songs mentioned. The one I'd add is Unforgettable by Nat King Cole.

To the poster who asked about slide shows- they're fairly common in my area at a gathering after a funeral/service. I always volunteer to do them, personally it helps me alot in the grief process to "do something" and it always brings a smile to folks to think of the good times they had with the ones they have lost. It's truly a celebration of a life.

Wow, this is kind of a painful thread...it's been two years since my Dad passed, do you ever get over it completely?? Usually it's fine, but this thread is difficult.

OP, I am very sorry for your loss....sounds like your Dad had a good long life though. Doesn't make it any easier on you but still.

At my dad's memorial service I really wanted that Hawaiin version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Then at the last minute I changed my mind, didn't want to cry, lol. I'm sure whatever you choose will be wonderful!

OP - I am so sorry for your loss. Others have made some wonderful suggestions for songs. I just wanted to add that I have, sadly, been to two viewings recently here in South Jersey: one in December for a fellow PTA/soccer/dance mom who was 41 years old and one earlier this month for the husband for another friend who was 48. Both had a slideshow running throughout the evening with really great pictures. It was so uplifting to see all the family pictures of holidays, vacations and special occasions. I think many funeral homes are offering monitors or screens for just this purpose. It's a great, high-tech way to display more pictures than you could practically display in frames or on a memo board which is what we did last time a family member passed away.

If he was in the military during WWII put a military tune in there. Many veterans that I talked to during that time were very proud of their military service.
