On DD's school supply list they have "Flash Drive". I hate to sound stupid but what is this and where do I get one?????

They are probably reffering to a USB flash Memory drive. These are itty bitty drives about the size of a pack of gum. People wear them around their necks, on a keychain or in a pocket. They are a handy way to carry files around. They use memory instead of disks and plug into a USB port on your computer.

You can buy them just about anywhere (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc). Here is a list of them at Amazon.

A flash drive is a portable removable drive based on flash memory. They hook up to your USB port and are typically have a loop for your keychain. They come in a variety of sizes, from 32mb all the way to 4GB.

They work similar to digital camera memory cards, except that they have a USB connection on the end of it.

You can buy them everywhere nowadays, Walmart, Target, BestBuy, OfficeMax, etc or you can go online and buy them at amazon, ecost.com, newegg.com, etc.

Here's a bunch from newegg:

What you buy is dependent on the memory size needs. Does the school have a specific size they mention?

These are the greatest little inventions ever!

I have one and it lights up with an LED blue light during use. Very cool! :)

Staples has one on sale for $19.94 this week.

Thanks for the quick replies!!!!!

I knew someone on the DIS would know!!!!

I love the flash disks but they are a pain to keep up with or for my dh they are a pain to keep up with. They are pretty small and can get lost in pockets or backpacks or whatever so I would tell your child to put it in the same place everytime after done using it. I have gave up on my dh doing that and he has to keep replacing them from his allowance. :rotfl:

I know some of them come with lanyards. I have mine on my keychain with my VPN security access - so no losing them there. I also have a carabiner on mine so I can just latch it on to my regular keychain or hook it to my belt loop.

You should be able to find a good rebate on one of these with back to school sales. I found the best way to keep up with mine was to either clip it to a key latch I had in my book bag, or to tie the lanyard string through the hole of the zipper inside my bag. SanDisk and Lexar are two good choices--used mine daily for 2 years and they never failed.

I keep mine on my keychain also. Just curious, what age/grade level is requiring a flash drive?
