What is a Disney pin?

I am just curious as to what a Disney pin is and how you get them.
I always use FL resident rates, but what is a Disney pin?

Disney pins can be purchased at many stores on property and traded with others

Pin codes are discounts that Disney sens out to people for no known reason
Some people have go a few well others have never got them
Personally I think if you book with discounts you are less likely to get one or if you go on a regular schedule
But there is no rhyme or reason to it
