What is a ding?

I really feel dumb asking this....I understand that it is a special by Southwest. But is like the Disney PIN emails where the flight is only available to those who receive it? Do you have to be sitting at the computer when it dings and respond immediately. I am looking for flights in September and I know they haven't even be released. Does that mean the ding fare will be released much later than the schedule?

I've searched through the ding history thread as much as I could but never saw where it was explained. I apologize if I missed where someone has explained. Thanks!

You have to download the Ding software from SW to your PC. They send the Dings to your PC. They seem to normally be good for several hours and you have to buy during the time they are valid. (I think this afternoon they released one at 1 that expired at 6:30 for example) You have to click thru the Ding link to book. If you just go to SW.com the ding fares aren't there.

The big issue I have with Dings is that lately they are for very limited dates. The one today had Bimingham to Orlando on Tues/Wed only for April 11-30 only for example.

So I downloaded this yesterday, and didn't receive that Birmingham ding today. Is that because my home town is Louisville and I will only get flights concerning Louisville?

You have exhausted my skill set. I don't have a clue how that works. I am bumping in hope someone can help!
