what is a biscuit

A soft form of puffy heaven. Slather it in sausage gravy and it is a religeous experience.:rotfl2:

Seriously, here in the states we put various meats and jams in them like a mini sandwich.

Hmmm....flour, baking powder, shortning, a little milk & salt....cooked usually end up being about an inch thick with a crusty top & bottom & soft, flakey center...hot, butter, yum!!

Oh my!! Religious experience indeed!!

I had to look where you were from to see if you were joking...

A biscuit is similar to a scone, just usually not sweet. Sometimes made with buttermilk. They are yummy!

I don't know how else to decribe them. I hope this helps a little!

That picture is what we eat here in the US and I love em! There are also biscuit style cookies and scones.

I know in England, a 'biscuit' is the same thing as a cookie. This may be true for some other places, too.

a cookie is a biscuit here in england

i do like american biscuits though although never really sure what u r supposed to eat them with

Oh child, you HAVE to have a hot, buttery biscuit when you find one. We love them with gravy (like sausage gravy) over them or with butter and jam (or honey) on them. YUM!

Chicken and biscuits is also really good. Cut the biscuit in half and layer chicken and gravy over each half. Serve with a side of mashed potatoes and some cranberry sauce and you have a great meal.

And the explanation for why Americans are so "healthy"! lol "I'll have some carbs with my carbs and you can top it with a layer of lard please!" :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

To my DIS pals across the Pond: The description and pictures here match the definition of a biscuit in WDW and in many (perhaps most?) of the US.

However, growing up in New York, a biscuit was a cookie -- a fairly bland and crisp type. ::yes::

So true mskayjay but also so very yummy. :)

At least this meal has some nutrition to it unlike a lot of the other junk many Americans eat. :stir:

As far as ingredients (listed earlier) there aren't many things simpler than biscuits. As far as cooking them.....that's a different story. This is not the proper forum to go into biscuit lore, but if you're unfamiliar with the genre and want to get your feet wet, Google "cream biscuits."

The explanation on the popular 'pedia' website is quite complete.

Try this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biscuit

Also, thank you for including your location because it helped us to understand that many people outside the US may not always be familiar with our foods (as we may not be with theirs as well).

Enjoy your trip to WDW when you get here! And welcome to the DIS! pixiedust:

BEATEN BISCUITS!!!:lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc Served split with thin slices of country ham. :bitelip: But I guess that begs the question "what is country ham?":rotfl:

Where in NY and when? I have lived in New York, Queens and Nassau county, all my life (50+ years :scared1:) and have never heard a cookie referred to as a biscuit. :confused3

I'm originally from the Northeast and brought bagels to a staff meeting at a mfg plant in South Carolina. Upon removing a bagel from the bag one of the workers asked, "what kind of biscuits are these?" I really had to compose myself to respond to a very honest question from a young man who grew up picking peaches on the farm. Its always a matter of perspective. Still one of the funniest "diversity" experiences I've ever had. He really wasn't getting the hole in the middel aspect of this "biscuit".
