HELP,
We are coming to disney in August and its the first time someone in our party is diabetic. I was wondering if restaurants make desserts specially for diabetics? I know my cousin loved the creme bulee from the contempoary resort and I was wondering if they could make it sugar free or have a good alternative? Also what about the ice cream social will they make a diabetic version of the sundae?? I feel so bad that I must find out and make the accomdations. Also, if restaurants do make special accomodations for diabetics where do you call to do this and long before your PS??
Any help would be appreciated:bounce: :Pinkbounc

I don't know if this will help but check out Our Laughing Place. You will have to do a search for it on google because I have not yet figured out how to post links. :o They mention many sugar free desserts that sound fabulous. I am assuming at least one of the reviewers is a diabetic. If you have a hard time finding it, let me know and I will see if I can give you better information.

you'll have much more luck at restaurants that are not buffet style - on our last visit to boma the chef made a special lactose free desert for one of us - and it was as good, if not better, than the prepared deserts - would guess that they will prepare somtething on request, but to be sure you can always call ahead - :)

We took my nephew last year and he is hypoglycemic. It is always a nightmare for him to eat out. When I called to make the PS I mentioned his condition. We went to Boma(buffet) and Jiko(restaurant) ,you won't believe the attention that he got!! He got to meet the wonderful Chef and Sous chef who came to our table and asked him what he wanted to eat, they prepared exactly what he wanted and he got to eat Dessert!! You have to understand what dessert means to a hypoglicemic, plus, you had to see his face while he was eating his cheesecake.PRICELESS!! When you call mention the condition and don't tell the diabetic person about the extra attention ,it will be a wonderful surprise for him or her.Leave it up to the wonderful people at WDW dining to make that meal special;)

Maybe post on the DISabilities forum as well.

Is your friend Type I (insulin dependent) or Type II (controlled by diet or pills)?

My DH is Type I so he justs gives himself extra insulin when he knows he will have more carbs or sugars more than normal.

Most diabetics are used to taking care of themselves and their eating. You might be worrying for no reason unless you friend has asked about eating lots of desserts.

Maybe ask your friend what they are interested in before worrying about it. They might be fine with whatever is offered at any restaurant.

If you have some special dietary requirements, you need to call the restaurant at least 24 hours ahead. We have had great luck for my type 1 son doing this. Sometimes, the chef will come out to speak with you to be sure they know just what you need.

We have had good luck at San Angel, Cinderella's Royal Table, Sci Fi, Concourse Grill ,Coral Reef and Brown Derby.

Good Luck and Enjoy!!

As the others have said, the key is to call in advance. They can not always guarantee a certain dessert (they will try when possible) but they will always have some sort of dessert that fits the dietary needs if you call in advance. Be forwarned, it's often sugar free cheesecake/pudding/sorbet, or a fresh fruit platter.
