What would you take? Other than important papers, I'd have to take some photos. I was thinking that I really should put my favorite photos together so I could easily grab them if I ever needed to. Or maybe even put them all on a CD so that I'd have them handy if I had to go somewhere. What would be really important to you?

My important photos are on CD and those CDs are packed in my hurricane kit. If I had to evacaute, I would take my hurricane kits which have all our important documents and survival stuff, the cat and his supplies, laptop computer, digital camera and some clothes.

My birds, family photo albums, my carnival glass collection, my disneyana collection. the rest of it I would leave.

That is really smart. I should do something like that.

Important papers, my hope chest (the contents at least) and my photo cds (I have slowly been transfering all our photos to cd and scanning the older ones and I have them all in a binder). Funny, that's all I can think of (besides the girls and pets)...

My kids, my DH, my cat, a weeks worth of clothing, medications & all the non-perishable food & drink I could, along with about 7 photo albums & our passports... I'd leave the rest in a heartbeat if it meant staying safe....

I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Scanning in my old favorite photos and putting them on DVD's.

I would take those DVD's and my bird.

DH and I were talking about this last night. He suggested we take a bunch of stuff and UPS overnight it to somewhere safe. I know the kids special stuffed friends would be in that box. I'd keep important papers like birth certificates with us.

I have 30 or so scrapbooks that would be too heavy to ship and would take up a lot of room in our truck - but I'd have to take them with us. I worked too hard on them!

And of course our laptop so I could check in with the Dis when we get somewhere safe! :)

Dh, kids, dog, food for all, laptop, camera, clothes, things to keep the kids occupied- books, favorite toy. dvds for the car, important papers and photo albums oh and my purse w/ wallet and cell phone w/ charger.

Thank God I have a mini van to put all this stuff.

I have an "emergency evacuation kit". It's two large, wheeled storage boxes that fit the trunk of my car. They contain 2 changes of clothing for DD and I, two towels and washcloths, cash, food and water for 5 days (with plates, utensils, cups), first aid supplies and generic meds (cough syrup, advil, eye drops, etc.), flashlights, glow sticks, a deck of cards, travel scrabble and yahtzee, cash, battery operated radio, extra batteries, travel sized toiletries, soap for washing clothes, antibacterial wipes, cat food, kitty litter, listing of emergency numbers, copies of SS cards, birth certificates, insurance policies, and divorce decree.

Sits under the stairs in the basement so I can wheel it right into the car. We keep pillows and blankets in the car trunk anyway so I don't have to pack them in there. Having lost everything in a house fire years earlier, I don't feel the need to grab "things" to take with us. People, pets, policies, personal documents, and supplies -- that's what I need. The rest you can keep in your mind and heart.

Living where we do I doubt we would ever have to evacuate, but there are times when we need to go to the basement in case of tornadoes. During those times of year I keep a tote box in the part of the basement that we go to that has things that are dear to us and couldn't be replaced. I had never really thought of adding some things that now I know I should... so come next Spring when tornado season starts up again I will be better prepared.

If it was something more immediate that we needed to get out for, first would be DD and Dash. If time allowed I would grab photo albums and home videos along with the Memory Box we keep for our son along with important papers, purse with ID and camera's, cell phones and chargers.

I am glad I saw this thread because I would never have thought to just grab a CD with photos on it, I would have went for the actual photo albums. I am about halfway through scanning all of our photos and making CD's of them. When I get done doing that I am going to always keep an extra set with DS's Memory Box, because I know that will be the first material possession I will grab. Thanks for the wonderful idea!

since we have to evacuate often it seems, every year at the beginning of hurricane season I load up all our photo albums in a box and have it ready to go just in case....aside from DH, DD's and dear pup....that is all I would care about taking...the rest can be purchased at some other point in time.

Well me? I would bring a photo album of my family. And pictures of my friends. I would bring my baby blanket (sentimental) and clothes and food.

Wow! I am very impressed! I may print this and do the same, although I'd include pictures!

I'm really surprised that not many have mentioned a VITAL item you should all have in your homes and should be on your emergency list:

CASH

In an emergency, your ATM and credit cards may or may not be of any use to you. Good old cash is universally accepted. That's the first thing I'd be grabbing, along with lots of the other things already mentioned.

I'd grab everything I'd need to establish identity and work in another location--SS card, birth certificates, credit cards, nursing license, home owner's insurance, etc. we keep all this stuff together in a small safe, easy to tote. Then I'd grab extra clothes, meds, diapers, and food.I would like to hope I would take my dog, but he's a big guy and if we were being evac'd for a long period we likely couldn't take him with us. :guilty:

I'd start by putting the Storm Stoppers on the indows, bring in the furniture off the lanai, and generally secure the exterior of the hosue. Then I'd take the TV's out of the armoires and wrap my Disney cels in contractor bags, and put them into the armoires.

I'd also move the crystal and china out of the glass front top of the china cabinet and instead put them into the non-glass front buffet.

I don't need to worry about flooding, I do need to worry about wind and water intrusion because of that. I'd put the family photo's up on the shelves in the hall closet, probably take a few irreplaceable ones with me. The photo's are all stored in plastic bins, so unless I lost the roof, they'd be fine like that.

In the car I'd take bottled water, non-perishable foods--probably all that I had of both. I'd take my two fur kids in their carrier, and bring a two week supply of food and one week supply of litter, and a change of bedding for them. I'd pack at least a weeks worth of clothes for the humans, plus pillow and comforter or blanket for each. I'd bring flashlights, batteries, a blue tarp and duct tape. I'd also bring my platinum records, and a framed drawing that my uncle did of my dad and I.

I'd take the contents of our safe--if it's important enough to be in there it needs to come with me. I'd also take what we call "The Book" which is all the documentation for the building of our house, right down to the colors of the grout. It's also got all the receipts for most of the furniture and housewares. WOuld help with any insurance claims or rebuilding.

Not sure what else, at that point it would depend on how much more room I had.

Anne

We have a get away case packed too. The dog, cash, id and my satellite phone would be my top grabs though.

First would be kids, cats and turtles (in that order). Our box of important papers and our photos would be next. I'd pack some clothes, food and medicines and blankets that were made by my grandmother.

We almost evacuated during Hurricane Isabel. I loaded up the car, ready to go.

Now I have an evac kit and storage bins (like aprincessmom) all set and ready. You won't have much time to gather stuff plus your mind will be on other things - so get those things together now.
