What if you didn't know??

I signed up a few months ago when I booked our trip (4 days! WHOOT!) and was really excited to find these forums. I'm confused however at how nasty some people are at some of the questions that get asked.
What if you DIDN'T know? What if you legitimately had a question, I've had many, and now were afraid to ask? I can only assume that new people join all the time, that "newbies" then make mistakes because they didn't ask.

A perfect example is this.
We did not buy park hoppers, we probablly won't use them I don't think, but I didn't realize that on the one day when we might I couldn't use one of my tickets in the morning to go to Magic Kingdom and then after a nap or meal, etc at my hotel use another days ticket to go to a different park.
If I'm willing to use 2 tickets on one day, it never occured to me that this wouldn't be allowed. It doesn't mean I'm trying to cheat the system, because it isn't like I would have asked to use the tickets again on a different day, I just didn't know any better.

I think that maybe more people would ask more questions if they didn't think they were going to be called a cheater or ridiculed. :(

I read an article the other day that said that only something like <10% of all disney vacationers plan their vacations, that most simply show up and think they can do it like a regular theme park. I think what happens is that so many people spend a lot of time here, sharing a lot of information that those that don't plan would never have the faintest idea about. Just an observation.
I'll go back to reading now-so that I dont' do anything wrong when we are there.
I hope everyone takes this the way I meant it, just as some feedback and not that I'm being cranky, but just some observatiosn from this newbie to the boards.
(I HAVE been to disney sevreal times and there is still lots I don't know and I learn more every day)

We're really excited about our upcoming trip. :cloud9:

I can say I have gotten pretty disney savvy, but I do still learn a lot from these boards. I also feel I have a lot to contribute.

But you see the same questions over and over again; even ones where there is a thread three down from the thread they just posted.

Then there are the people you just know didn't even bother to google the answer or check the sticky at the top.

Most of the real kickers are people asking questions, and you know by the way they worded it, they are looking for "expert advice" on how to skirt the system. It is just by the way they ask the question - in two or three postings. Why anyone would come on a board that 99 percent of the people are genuinely here for the love of Disney, and then ask how to bend/break the rules, is beyond me.

The ones that I get most passionate about are on the resorts boards; when people ask how "picky" Disney is about the amount of people staying in your room. My answers are usually very, very terse, because I am an architect and know what the building code says; I feel like no other place would anyone ever question the occupancy of a hotel room, except at Disney and I am very quick to answer them correctly.

Hi Tinker Kel... & welcome to the boards... I'm new here too!

I'm sorry you feel afraid to ask anything on here...

I think you should ask away! Afterall, isn't that what forums like this are for?

That being said, please don't feel bullied... there will always be bullies! No matter where you go and at least this is not face-to-face like in school... it's just a silly internet posting... don't be threatened!

& For the bullies out there... there are nicer ways of addressing what you may feel are silly or "Disney-Wrong" views.... We should be welcoming more people into our community... not scaring them away... just saying....

I think typically the first or second posts answering a questions like yours will be answered kindly - but then someone (OP or someone else) jumps in and starts arguing and the thread takes on a life of its own. When that happens, let it go - it is no longer about you and your question.

Also it is possible that the OP might construe an answer and explanation as snarkiness, when they is really meant to be informative.

Finally, when the search function is working, it is frustrating to see the same questions over and over - last week there were several threads on the first page asking which week someone should go in October.

Hope this helps. You should try the Community Board sometime! :scared1:

This. And to the OP, a belated :welcome:!

Welcome.

I say "ask away". What I've experienced (less than a year) is you will mainly get "straight" answers as long as you ask your question "straight". There will be some responses that are rude, but I feel they are in the minority until the OP tries to "argue" a point.

My suggestion for the "rude" responses... IGNORE them. Don't respond saying they're rude or wrong. Simply ignore them.

You can try the search feature depending on the subject (ie: searching for 'parking at DTD' would probably get an answer, but simply searching for 'parking' may or may not).

Good luck!

See- that makes sense to me. :) I guess maybe because I'm NOT looking to break the rules, but some things that ARE are things I never would have realized. Another example, and I'll duck in case you want to throw things, is the "pool hopping" issue. When I was at Disney last time we stayed at the Polynesian. They encouraged us to go look at the other resorts because my kids were all into the different theming. We were at another resort, I can't remember which one but I want to say All Star movies? It has a pool with Fantasia mickey mouse. It was definatly one of the value resorts. My dd's FAVORITE. She wanted to go in that pool so badly. We didnt' have suits with us, so we didn't, but it never would have occured to me that we weren't supposed to. Simply because, we were staying at DisneyWorld Resort, this was part of Disney World Resort.
To me that would be like staying at Holiday Inn that has 2 pools and using one that is sunneir than the other. I'm glad we didn't because once it was explained it makes perfect sense and I can see why.
But I woudln't have been trying to break the rules. I just would have wanted my little girl to get her chance to "swim with mickey"

THANK YOU! :) There is tons to learn. I guess maybe I always think the best of everyone, I didnt' realize that people really set out to cheat the system.

That sounds like a question I posted recently. I wasn't at all put off by the answer, they were just giving me information I didn't know. I was glad someone took the time to post an answer to my question.

Have a great trip, TK.

As to your question, the Internet brings out bullies. I have seen them here on these boards for the 12 years I have been here. And at all levels.

Again, have a great trip, and welcome to the DIS.

Yes, what karentots just said. :thumbsup2

I'll admit, I felt apprehensive about making my first post when I started lurking on the boards. I've read some responses that I felt were a bit "cranky" (and in my head said "wow, this person needs a nap!"), and others where I wished I could reach through my monitor and hug them.

Please make yourself at home and let any negative posts glide off your back. :)

When you here for a while, you can more or less say if question is asked to learn info, or to stir a pot and unfortunately some create accounts only for that.

Also some questions are so controversial that all the mess directed at question itself and not op.

It is weird when some members create new threads while several on a same topic can still be found on first 2 pages.

Questions do repeat all the time and I do not find it wrong, not everyone searches before ask and asking may be faster and more productive. Anyway, someone will always answer the question even if it appeared for the 1000th time.

Nobody tries to be mean to newbies just because they are newbies. However my advice to any newbie, read, learn, get a feel of the board before you post because jumping in action right away with your own idea of what should be accepted at online discussion can and will get you in trouble. Be nice and we will be nice to you and trust me, we will share all the info we have to make your trip better.

Welcome and Ask Away...there are no such things as dumb questions, and I dont know why people have to get so snarky when they respond sometimes. These boards are a wealth of information and can help you out with so much!

So true! Once you get the answer (you can't use 2 separate days of tickets to park hop) then don't go back and look at the thread any more.

Did someone say pool hopping? Please pass the popcorn::

Hiya :goodvibes

There seems to have been a spate of controversial threads lately (or maybe I am getting better at tuning into them popcorn:: )

The majority of threads though are answered with loads of info and opinions without getting antsy - and I wouldnt be put off asking anything

I do get fed up seening the same questions posted time after time after time though and one of my pet hates is when someone comes in after 54 pages and says they cant be bothered reading the thread so can someone just tell them XYZ

I havent killed anyone over it though

I say down with all newbies! J/K! Welcome TK! :). I've been here almost a year and continue to learn things even though I also consider myself to pretty Disney savvy. I think a lot of times people ask controversial questions that elicit seemingly terse responses. Sometimes I think it's because it's been asked and answered a thousand times and sometimes it might strike a chord personally, who knows?

Btw, I think you may be the first person who ever wanted to pool hop from Deluxe TO Value! Wonder how that thread would go? :)

its amazing what people will do when they think they are hidden behind a computer - as far a questions, its the best way to find new info - and yes there are a lot of duplicate questions, but each one is a little different making the search function difficult - so I for one say ask away!
