What if we can't go?

After 23 years with current employer, DH is interviewing for a new job (maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks:love: ) If he is offered the job he will ask them about our 7 day trip to WDW in late October. If he can't go, we will call off our trip because it just wouldn't be as fun without him. We have a package and everything is paid for. Can we take that money and tranfer it to another date in July for example? I don't want to lose any more money besides our airline & MNSSHP tickets. Anyone ever had this situation? We need pixie dust for this job, it would be a MUCH needed change.

Negotiating time off is fairly common these days. I think (and hope) your husband won't have an issue working that out. If it's the 2nd or 3rd interview and they are genuinely interested in him, he can bring it up in the terms you described. "We've bought and paid for it" blah, blah, blah...I think you'll be fine.

I'm editing this just to throw in that the last two people we interviewed and brought in negotiated time off while negotiating salary.

Without being arrogant if a company is hiring and selects your husband they really need him and want him to come and be happy. Your husband shouldn't ask for time off per se, but rather indicate that he has a family commitment for late October (OK to say its Disney too). That sets a tone that his family does matter and that he'll be up front with the company.

Good luck on all counts!

Good luck on the job!!!! This happened when I started this job. I had a vacation planned. I let them know in the interview that this was a vacation that was long planned and hoped that it would be acceptable. They were totally fine with it.

Hope your trip works out for you.

Denise

Thanks so much for the responses! I hope it works out the way you say but either way, you've all made me feel much better. We are taking our granddaughter out of school to go and my mother is also coming along and it is her second trip to Disney, the first time was 1971. She is so looking forward to it. I have to admit that getting the job and still going to WDW would make me do this;

I agree with the above posters. Negotiating time off for a previous family commitment is often workable. If, however, it doesn't work out and you have to change your dates, your package can be changed and so can your airline tickets, while non-refundable can be changed to another date with a change fee so you don't lose them altogether. I think you could very well also get your money back on your MNSSHP if you call and whine a lot....

I think if you are upfront with the prospective employer they should be fine with it. Good Luck!!

Similar thing just happened to me. A company called me out of the blue and tried to recruit me from my current position. I thought why not - doesn't hurt to talk. So went through the process and interviews and such. I was upfront with them about the trips we have planned (including Disney) coming up and they all said fine. Well, they made an offer and we went into negotiation stage. After couple days, everything was set but they bulked at giving time off for the trips I have already planned (and told them about from the start). Needless to say, I turned down the offer. This was all with HR and the hiring managers.

A week later, got a call from the owner of the company and he asked why I turned down the job. I told him why. He was surprised and asked me if I would reconsider. I told him no.

Nothing stands in the way between my family and WDW! :)

Thanks! You wouldn't believe what a good whiner I can be!

What a coincidence. I am in the same situation. We booked our trip back in March for this November and I was called yesterday for a job interview. I haven't worked in almost seven years (since I became pregnant with my daughter) and you might know our first Disney trip and the time I decide to go back to work come at the same time!! I'm just going to be honest with them and hope they will understand. Mine isn't a big deal job, but one I want very much. I always hoped when I went back to work I could get a job at my daughters' school as a teacher assistant or secretary so I could be on her schedule and have a little extra shopping money. Well nothing came open this summer, but now, three weeks after school started, something has! Anyway, let's send each other good wishes and maybe we will get some pixie dust and hopefully things will work out for all of us:thumbsup2

Ditto here and as a suprising bonus, supervisor called Wednesday and told me that I could use what PTO (paid time off) I've earned since starting there. ( I didn't ask for PTO because I knew that the employee book stated that PTO couldn't be used until your 1st anniversary)

I've done it before, at the interview I've addressed an upcoming trip that I've committed to and would like to take the time off. This has happened twice and it's never been a problem with the employer. Good luck.

Thanks again for the encouragement. Maybe by this time tomorrow we'll know something and I hope I don't have to tell you he didn't get the job! He is going to tell them about the trip in the interview but to not let it be a deal breaker. The job is most important but like everyone else, we want it all! He has been so miserable at his current job that it will seem like a vacation if he gets this new job.

First, pixie dust to your husband in hopes of getting a new job. I would hope the company could give him time off for a trip already planned and paid for, but if they need him, he may have to put off the trip. (Although I hope not!).

But, I'd like to try to answer your original post. Most airlines will allow you to change your ticket with some kind of change fee (generally $25-50) plus the difference if there is any. As for the MNSSHP tickets, they are non-refundable. You try to get a refund, but they tend not to budge on that. BUT, you could try to see if another disser needs tickets for your day and they can buy them from you.

As for the package itself, I am not sure of Disney policy? Does anyone know once you are in the 45 days?:confused3

This happened to us in Feb. DH was up front with them, and told them we had two trips planned. One was Feb (he was interviewing in January) and was pretty much non-negotiable even though he didn't expect to be paid for the time off, the trip was for our 10th anniversary and paid for, and the other was in May, and he would build up the comp time he needed to take off. He told them that one could be rescheduled for later in the summer, but that I'd kill him if it got canceled altogether.

He had a little leverage though, they were short 5 positions and he was the only one applying, plus he had worked with the man who would be his boss for a few years previously.

I think if you make any changes after the 45-day mark you are charged either $100 or $200 penalty.

Thank you, LMLB! The interview was this am and it lasted an hour. I'm thinking if they didn't like him, they would have booted him out after 30 min. Anyway, he told them of our trip and one of the interviewer said "Hey, I just got back from Disney World last week!" but they didn't say yes or no about the trip. I don't know when we will hear, but they said they move slow. Don't you love it when your life just hangs in the balance?
