Today I was at the local grocery store. A lady was in the produce section opening the pints of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. She was SAMPLING all the fruit in these pints~!

I told a store manager and she came over and told the lady that she couldn't eat the food that they were trying to sell. The woman's response went something like this: "But I need to try them all to see if they taste OK."

I am not even kidding when I tell you that she ate her way through a small fortune in the produce section!!!

I first thought she was gutsy for doing this. Next my mind went to the fact that she was stealing. Finally, I thought about how gross it was that her hands were all over the food that the next person will be buying!

I just had to share with my DIS buddies........I knew you would love it!

It doesn't surprise me. There are some people who do that in the deli department here. They will order a pound of ham, turkey, cheese etc. and then ask to taste each one. It's cold cuts people! You buy the same brand every week! It does not change! Go buy a sandwich and leave the deli guys alone.

I saw a guy open the plastic trays of apples, take a bite of one, put it back in the tray, and close the tray. He did this with several of them before my husband brought an employee over to the apples.

LOL... I remember a quote from the Golden Girls "Rose, one (grape) is testing. Fourteen is brunch!!"

That is annoying though, I pick up a pint of whatever berries I'm trying to buy, and there's *clearly* less than a pint. Even more irritating is that the rest of the pints look like crap.

I hate it when parents will give there kids or grapes to eat in the store and then go up to weigh the empty container.

ITA. Plus, the fruit hadn't been washed. Yuck!!!!

I worked at Target for awhile and defiantly knew that tons of food was consumed in store before purchasing...aka bottle soda and water, candy bars, individual snack bags

I also couldn't stand when they hand you a box opened up to ring up and go sorry I had to eat some I was so hungary. My thought is you are a grown adult and you have no self control to wait 10-15 minutes more. Same with when they give the stuff to their kids it is just teaching bad manners. It is not your property till you pay for it.

I was in the store last year and there was a special on oranges by the bag. There was some guy that was opening multiple bags and taking one out of each bag and stuffing them in another bag. It took me a minute to realize that he just stole 4 extra oranges to stuff in his bag and that 4 other people were no short one orange because of this yahoo. :sad2:

I don't shop frequently (that's DH's job) so I really wasn't paying attention at first. I was just like :confused3

Years ago, when I worked in the produce section of a grocery, I saw stuff like this all the time. One of the most annoying was a woman who would thwack the apples with her fingernails in order to "test them". For various and sundry reasons, we were forbidden to stop her doing it, we just had to sort through the apples later and remove all the ones that she had gouged her fingernails into, or dented with her incessant thwapping. IIRC, she usually bought three or four apples. . . and we threw away another couple dozen.

Here they offer you the first slice and are shocked when you say I don't want a taste. I have asked for a taste when it was something new I was trying.

ETA: All kids are given cheese too.

When I worked at a grocery store, I saw all kinds of crazy things. People would open lots of items and let their kids eat them. Sodas, they would eat a banana - they are a weigh item. They would break the tops off of broccoli and leave the stems in the produce section. Ugh. It was tough being a cashier in college. lol And high school. ha ha

Years ago my wife came across 2 women in a grocery store that were breaking the thick ends off of asparagus sold by the pound. She came up next to them, picked up some of the discarded ends and said, "just what I was looking for, I love asparagus ends, thank you for doing this for me!" The stock boy in the produce section nearly fell over laughing she said.

I totally agree. I have never understood why people do that. :headache:

Eww...that's disgusting! Who knows where those fingernails have been. What is wrong with people???:confused3

Okay, I admit it, I've let little ones eat the food before I purchased it. Most of the time, it was a bagel or roll, and I just put an empty bag in my cart for a reminder to let the cashier know. It was always food I hadn't planned on purchasing for home, so the store had an extra sale because I wanted to keep cranky kids happy so I could finish shopping.

But how do you know the person didn't have a legitimate reason to open the package and eat a few things? (I have a cousin who is a bad diabetic and if his sugar goes low, he needs something to eat fast. He doesn't have time to wait until he pays for it first. )

And as long as they are paying for it, why do you care?

My favorite are the people taking off the outside cabbage leaves - when cabbage cost 17 cents per pound!

Well, in way of thinking it stealing if you use something and don't pay for it first. Now in your cousin case of a medical emergency that different. I don't let my kids open anything until I pay for it first. If they need a snack I get it frist and pay for it. I'm going to get my flame jacket

I always try a grape before I buy a bunch- but just one grape! And, 99% of the time, I end up buying them. I have also let my kids, when they were littler, eat things before I purchased them-like letting them open a box of crackers or something. I've never had a cashier look at me strangely for it.

This thread reminded me of something my sister & I used to do at the grocery store when we were little. Whenever we'd get to the baking aisle we'd sneak and rummage through the shelf that had the bags of Nestle chocolate chips and we'd eat any loose ones we'd find. :scared1: Yuck. My mom never knew we did this. Sorry mom!
