What I learned at DL with my XT

I just got back from DLR with my 3 kids, wife, and my Canon Rebel XT that I've had for four months now (the camera I mean, I've had the wife for 11 years). Here are a few things that I learned on my trip about using my camera.

1) ISO is a useful and necessary setting to manipulate to get the right picture at the right time. However, when you are done taking pictures of the C3-PO at Star Tours (with ISO 1600) be sure to change it back down again when you take pictures of the kids in front of the castle at the middle of the day. (my bad)

2) If your autofocus hunts when taking pictures of the fireworks, it is handy to change it to manual focus. However, remember to turn autofocus back on the next morning at Goofy's Kitchen for your character breakfast. (my bad again)

3) Using the built in flash with the 28mm-135mm IS lens and lens hood will cause a shadow when used at 28mm.

4) The built in flash is much more powerful than the flash on my Nikon P&S, however, there were several times I wish I would have gotten a Speedlite before I left.

5) Shutter speed faster than 1/focal length is not just a good idea, it is essential.

6) Willcad's patented ziploc method for waterproofing your camera works great on splash mountain if you close the bag tight around the lens.

7) One battery and a single 1gb card per day were sufficient and gave me about 250 photos (though I brought extras of each).

8) It pretty funny handing your XT to a passerby and have them look through the LCD to try to frame your picture.

9) Its pretty sad to see a guy with a 30d hold his own camera like a P&S.

10) A backpack with an XT, video camera, P&S, kid's sweatshirt, water bottle, etc, etc, etc on the floor next to your feet does not leave much leg room on just about any ride you go on.

11) No matter what your intentions are for meticulously composing the definitive "disney" shot that is worthy of putting on a post card, you just have to remember that you are there for the kids to have fun. Your interest in photography as a hobby has to take back seat to that every time!

Always close the bag!

Sorry, I don't hand my camera to anybody I don't know except CMs.

That is hilarious!! I just returned from WDW and experienced the EXACT same things as you!!! I got some great pictures at night on main street - had the iso pumped waaay up on my Rebel...the next day - forgot to change it back when we were out in the bright sunlight at the Swan! CRAP!!! Then I was using Manual focus for fireworks...forgot to change the switch back to automatic. CRAP!!! I'm with ya on #4 too - I was wishing I had a speedlite too. That's my next purchase! I am also thinking about getting a canon lens with IS - but I'll wait on that..

You said it best with #11 - I don't have kids, but it's easy to get obsessive about the perfect Disney shot!! God knows that was me..I'm thankful to have a very patient husband!

You can make more kids but you will never get a second chance shot of what Cinderalla's castle looked like in august of 1989! Hehehheee

it's REALLY sad when I peeked at a guy's 20D with 17-40 f.4 L lens set to the green-square zone (it's during a parade).

I saw a guy at The Land Grille with a 1dS and a 50 f1.8. C'mon sport, after dropping that kind of cash at least spring for the f 1.4! ;)

maybe he doesn't know better. One of my friend's client actually got angry at herafter buying 1Ds mkII because he can't use EF-S lens. --my friend is the store owner --

Why did Canon even put the green square on the 20D and 30D? Didn't they leave it off of the 5D and their other high-end DSLRs?

coz 20D and 30D are still pro-sumer camera. their single digit cameras are full-pro cameras.

Besides, I still use the night mode when I have to do it in an instant.

You do mean 1GB not 1MB right?

Sorry DD1967, you were right. I meant giga, not mega. I've edited my post, thanks for the catch. :thumbsup2

DOOOH!!! Been there done that! Its even worse when you do something similar with a film camera. I ruined a roll of film from an 8 year olds birthday because I forgot to change from manual. I thought it was on Program. Talk about underexposed. I wanted to concentrate on taking the pictures and capturing the moment quickly and not worry about the settings. Oops!

I did that recently. Was taking pictures of the moon one night then a few days later I gave the camera to DW to take pics of me & the kids. All of them were out of focus. Didn't really realize it till I downloaded them on the computer.

I hate when I do that. One to many times. Its even worse at 18mm

Thanks for the reminder. I have to go and put one of these bags in my camera bag right now before I forget again.

I'm in the process of getting extra ones now. I'll also be bringing a laptop.
