I haven't hosted a get together in YEARS (about 9) & back then it was just for a few friends that were in town home for the holdiays...we have now moved away from there but still want to have a get together - But I'm clueless on what to call it (I'm gonna send invites -I think). We've just moved into out house so noone has seen it. So I thought housewarming (but I don't want gifts) or openhouse (but that seems like a come & go kinda party-which may be ok-don't know yet) will allow kids (everyone has them) and maybe doing something on a Sat evening so I could mention come by after you shop (except it's an hr or 1/2hrs away)---there are good outlet shopping nearby so I could mention come shop there & stop by for desserts @ our house...something of that sort -
wouldnt' mind if they brought something for the party but if they do go out shopping first it wouldnt' be any good...

SO HELP ME! I need wording help & ideas... please

If it's in December, just call it a Holiday Party and leave it at that. I wouldn't meantion "come by after your holiday shoping" since you're so far away. Have food and drinks of your own, but ask guests to bring snacks and/or deserts (they'll be easier to bring if they have a long drive).

How about this:

Holiday Party at the Smith's Home!
Children are welcome!
December 17, 2005 at 7 PM
Please feel free to bring snacks or deserts
RSVP by December 10 at 555-1234
Hope to see you there!

Why don't you do:

Open House
Join us for coffee and dessert on
X date
at
X time
It'll be a nice way to get together after the rush of holiday shopping
Your kids are welcome to come too

Start it at 730PM, so folks won't be expecting food. You have said it's coffee and desserts, so they know to eat a meal before they come.

Have coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milk (for the kids) and maybe some mulled cider to make the house smell yummy, and, of course, decadent desserts.

DH & I decided that desserts may not be a good idea 'cause the folks have such a long way to drive back home (we were thinking around the 7;30 time) & that's just too late w/kids to visit for 1 hr & then drive back home....SO NOW I'm thinking of just appetizers...but gotta figure out what time, & how to word the invites for this....

HELP anyone?

Honestly, because of the distance , I would have a Sunday afternoon dessert party. I wouldn't want to drive one hour at night home from a party with kids.

How about a brunch? You could do it on a Saturday morning/afternoon; everyone can fuel up before their shopping and the kids would enjoy it.

That sounds like the best idea of all. If you have a punchbowl, you could make a festive, non-alchoholic punch with fruit juice. (I like a cranberry based punch...not too sweet for the adults, but still sweet enough for the kids.) Have a sliced ham, biscuits or English muffins, maybe scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, and coffee cake type stuff. Add coffee and tea, and you're set. Since you don't have to serve liquor, it wouldn't cost as much as a cocktail party.

I've never been comfortable asking my guests to bring anything. If they do bring something, I consider it a gift.

I have an "open house" but give a time frame of a minimum of 2 hours, max of 3. For brunch, I would put 10:30 or 11 AM to 1:30 or 2 PM.

.

I would do an afternoon get together. Could be on a Sat or Sun. Maybe have appetizers and desserts. Would give people time enough to get home before it's too late. You could have some good, easy, and filling appetizers. If people offer to bring something, that's fine, but it would be simple enough that you wouldn't really need people to.

Or do what friends of ours are doing--have everyone bring cookies and then do a cookies exchange of all the cookies that haven't been eaten.
