What happens to the points?

We want to stay at BWV in Sept., but own at VWL. We are considering buying a small add-on at BCV, which, with borrowing would be enough points to reserve a studio at 11 months in the area, as a back up plan. If we get our spot at BWV, what happens to the BCV points we made the back up plan with? Will the borrowed points have to stay in this year? After we cancel the reservation, can the current year's points be banked? Last question: Am I ever going to figure out all this DVC stuff?

Once points are borrowed, they can't be put back. You'd have to use them by the end of the use year.

I'd suggest looking at a resale for BWV points, or if you want just a few, call your guide and ask to be put on the waitlist for BWV points through DVC. Depending on your use year, you may get lucky quickly. The only downfall of buying resale is the relatively high closing costs to purchase small contracts. If you are buying a larger contract, it's not such a big deal. We've bought one via DVC and two resale and have had nothing but great experiences.

To answer your question, yes, the current year's points can be banked, as long as you cancelled the reservation more than 31 days in advance, and they weren't points banked from the previous year. You also have to be within your banking "window". It's just the borrowed points that you have to use by the end of your current use year.

And yes, you will figure it out. It's not too complicated, really. Just keep using up all your points within their use year and you'll have no problems. ;)

Before you jump into anything, you may want to try to make ressies at the 7 month mark first. Maybe you can get what you want, provided you aren' t really picky--insisting on a standard rather than a preferred view, for example. I made ressies at two months out this year, and got what I wanted, except for the standard view. Ressies for those rooms do need to be made at 11 months, but if you're OK with the number of points you already have, then this plan might work for you.

I agree with Cruelladeville. Unless you absolutely have to have a standard view, you should be able to book BWV for a September stay at the 7 month mark. You might have to use the waitlist for some of the days, but I don't think it will take long before it comes through for you.

Do keep in mind that that the BWV rehab work will continue in 2003. It takes quite a few rooms out of service, so availability in general will be more difficult until it is completed. You might want to wait to make your judgement until after the rehab is complete. To repeat, after the rehab completes, September should be one of the easier times to book at the 7 month window.

Good luck and best wishes.

Now I'm really confused. When I posted a while back about availability at BWV in Sept. everyone said it's too hard to reserve there at 7 months for any kind of room, and especially this year because of the rehab. I am bringing a guest who has been planning a BWV trip for two years, so I want to make sure we can at least stay in the area.

Lynda, that's the problem with generalizations regarding the 7 month versus 11 month window. It all depends on luck and your flexibility, date and location-wise.

Maybe I have too much of both, but the 7 month window has never been a problem for me. Others have had less luck with it.

Have you considered "trading" points/reservation with a BWV owner? Perhaps you can find a BWV owner to make your reservation for you at the 11 month window and you can make a VWL at the 11 month window for the BWV owner.

Another option would be to rent BWV points and then rent out your VWL points. You may or may not come out even on that.

Whatever you decide, hope it works out for you.

P.S. I still think you will get a ressie at 7 months, but maybe one of the above methods would be worth it to you for "peace of mind." Good luck!
