What happens if your type of car is gone?

I booked a premium car for our upcoming trip and now I noticed that they are no longer offering that type of car when looking to see if prices have dropped. I am assuming that this type of car is now sold out?

What happens if I get to the airport and they don't have any left? Do I get upgraded or do I take the risk of being downgraded?

In my experience when booking minivans (people and luggage hauler).... they offer you free upgrades with what they have onsite. Then again, not everyone is able to drive an extended length 8 passenger SUV. Gas cost, parking, and safety becomes an issue.

The better places will relocate vehicles to meet demand.

Looking for a lower price? Pay attention to cancellation policies when booking early. If price drops, then just rebook and cancel the orginal reservation.

Airport? There savings in some cities by getting a vehicle away from airport. Personally I look for free hotel shuttles to get to and from the airport, especially when time zone challenged for safety.

Usually the before rather than the latter, but from actual experience, it can go either way.

If a downgrade... think about luggage capacity, especially with a family. Booking a minivan and finding tiny compacts would not work with me.

I rented from Hertz in August in San Francisco.

When we arrived at nearly midnight, they had tons of people sitting around "waiting" for their cars, since they said they didn't have them. They didn't offer a free upgrade but wanted to charge me $50/day to upgrade.

After accepting a $25/day upgrade I went out to the garage that had over 100 cars sitting there, including the one I had originally booked.

I went back in and demanded by car I rented at no additional fee.

I will never rent from Hertz again, and just be careful about "upgrades."

A few times I have been told upfront that I am getting an upgrade (for the same price) as the class of car I choose was sold out. I have also been asked if I wanted to upgrade a few times for $XX a day, and have declined, but then told after a few theatrical key strokes "ooops you original car class was sold out" and I would be getting a free upgrade. So they basically wanted me to pay for the upgrade that I should have received for free.
