What happens if you don’t use your whole purchased onboard credit

I’d like to buy an onboard credit for our upcoming cruise with discounted GC to cover tips and excursions. I’ve had the experience before of an excursion being missed because a port was skipped. What happens if you buy an on board credit and then dont use it all?

If you have paid more than you end up owing, you will get a refund to the original form of payment (in reverse order — latest first). So, if you pay with gift cards, be sure to hang onto the cards until after the cruise.

DCL uses onboard credit as:
  1. Any non-refundable OBC is used first — this would be OBC from Disney for whatever reason (not as common now)
  2. OBC from “other” sources such as from a TA
  3. OBC you pre-purchase
  4. Gift cards or cash you put on the account after boarding
  5. Credit card
Any unused amount will be refunded to the original form of payment — so hold on to any gift cards you’ve used to pay for the cruise or OBC.

I wouldn’t put the gift cards on your account until you board, and even then maybe some at a time. Watch your stateroom account and pay it down occasionally. That way you don’t have to guess which gift card has remaining balance.
