I'm as we "speak" in Wilderness Lodge. For the first time, I didn't smell that wonderful lobby fragrance when you come through those doors. What's up????

Also, we were at Downtown Disney in the Christmas Shop, and weren't greeted by the Christmasy cinnamon and spice fragrance there, either. What's up with that, too???

We were over at the Wilderness lodge the other night just to look around and I was waiting for that smell I hear so much about. I was wondering where it was also.

I am not sure what the "smell" is.

However the WL used to smoke their meats they serve in the restaurants in a Smokehouse on the property. So many guests complained about the overwhelming smokey smell they no longer do it on the property.

Also the fireplace in the main lobby used to be wood burning. Again guests complained about the smell and the smoke, so now the fireplace is gas.

When the Lodge first opened back in the mid-90s, the smoky smell would fill the courtyard as well as the lobby. I thought it was wonderful.

Apparently I was in the minority. When I went back for my next visit in 1998, the smoky smell was gone, though the lobby seemed to still have a smellitizer with some sort of fragrance. Perhaps even that smell is gone now as well?

I am sad to hear the smells of WL are gone.

That said, my asthma has been getting worse this year and I have been having difficulty even at home with fires in the fireplace. I am completely hoarse for a couple days afterward. Maybe some very sensitive folks have complained. It could really set off someone who has difficulties.

I have to stay out of "craft shows" due to all the artificial flowers that use eucalyptus. That really sets me off coughing and wheezing.

Just a thought.

I did read a warning about AKL as the roof or some part of the structure has a treatment that can make sensitive people have trouble. I guess that is one place I will avoid.

You were probably not in the minority of those that liked the smell. But usually as with everything those that don't like something complain, those that like something remain silent until it's gone and they miss it.

I always thought our towels had a sweet smell in the bathroom at WL, I can't exactly describe it; I think it was like a honey cinnamon scent. I'll have to see if I notice any smells next month!

I believe some of the smell went away when the lobby fireplace was converted from a wood burning fire to gas logs. I also seem to recall that some of the aroma changes were due to sensitivities people had to the scents.

I remembered the towel scent- it's maple syrup! I'll check for it again.

What a disappointing thread!

We are going back to the WL for the first time since 1996 and were so looking forward to the woodsy, smokey smells in the air. Next you're going to tell me that they don't play that music anymore either!

That's was one of the BEST things about walking into the lobby of the WL. I am really going to miss it the next time we are back there!!

:( Bummer. I loved the smell of WL.

Just please don't tell me they've done the same to AKL - The smokey, spicey smell is part of the Magic that made us choose to stay there next trip.....

Although I too am disappointed, I can understand why Disney seems to be becoming more aware of scent allergies and sensitivities. I think it would be horrible to walk into a place loaded with scent if it caused you to have a migraine or trouble breathing. So, we should at least give kudos for that. Now if we could only stop people from washing in perfume before using public transit, the world would be a better place. But I digress...

Oh, you're not going to like this part either!!! :badpc:

Not only was that wonderful smell missing, but the music wasn't playing either. Well I warned you that you weren't going to like it!!! Nor did we!!!

It was beautifully decorated (as always) - as were Boardwalk and Yacht & Beach Club.

We still had a great 7 days!!!

No more of that wonderful WL fragrance? Bummer! After staying there in January 2003 I came back here and started a thread about the best smelling Disney resort, and I ranked WL as number one! It smelled like a sweet barbeque sauce to me. I looked forward to it when we'd return from the parks.
