What happened to Miss America

But back when I was a kid, this was a big deal! You popped a bunch of popcorn, and rooted for your home state gal to win!

Now it's stuck on TLC with no major sponsor. What happened?

Personally, I don't think they adapted with the times very well.

Can't say as I've been a real big fan after about the age of 8. The final straw was when it left Atlantic City. IMHO -- the kitsch factor was all it had going for it.
Probably, my view is somewhat more jaundiced than it might otherwise be, because the couple pageant girls that I have known were not really people that I was very comfortable around -- different world views, goals, you name it.

Even on Miss American: Reality Check they are saying that the pagent is too fake and needs to be more modern.. Apparently the judging is going to reflect that this year.

I don't want to call myself old......LOL......but I know what you mean, watching miss america every september was a big deal!
I didn't even watch, I saw the tlc commercial, and was wondering what that was all about!

I'm a child of the 70's, (yes, I'm old as well) and I can remember when Miss America was an event. Mom and Grandma and I would gather 'round the TV and hang on every moment. (I think it was always sponsored by Clairol, if memory serves)

Anyway, I loved watching all the fashions and hairstyles the girls were wearing, and always got a kick out of the 'talent' competition. (fashions ? hairstyles ? ...guess the writing was on the wall about my future, lol)

I was surprised last night to see it had been relegated to The Learning Channel. Times have changed. I'd like to say for the better, but now young girls are looking up to the Britney's and Paris Hiltons of the world, so make your own conclusions about that...

Of my five children, I only had one daughter and she is now 27. She's a drummer and I think her heroes growing up were most likely Keith Moon, Maureen Tucker, and Animal from the Muppets. My granddaughters are still way too little to tell how they're gonna go -- but I was heartened the other day when I found a bare-naked Bratz doll behind the wheel of a Tonka Truck out in the garden.

Child of the 70's here too. I have no idea what happened. I can tell you the last time I watched was 1988. The only reason that I remember that is because the Miss Tennessee that year was a woman that I was friends with as a young child. I had to see if Carrie would win or not. Sadly, she didn't, but that was the last time I watched. I never really was into the whole thing much, but I know that in the 70's and into the early 80's it was a big deal for quite a lot of folks.

Beauty pagaents call themselves scholarship programs, but the scholarships are worth less than the cost of competing in the pageants. There probably are some very real skills to be learned from competing in pageants, but the costs vs. benefits ratio would be very low for most young women and the parents expected to foot the bills.

Would anyone here encourage their daughter to compete in beauty pageants?

Well, if I had one I'd like to think I'd encourage her to do what she was interested in, and if that was a beauty pageant...well, I wouldn't be to thrilled about it, but I wouldn't let on. I'd be right there cheering and helping (and paying, I'm sure) just as much as I could.

No, I would not encourage my daughter to participate in any sort of beauty pagent.

I know this is an essentially light hearted thread, and I'll try to keep it that way, but I hated those Miss America Pagents! Far too much of "why can't you be like that" to make me comfortable. I was and always will be a tomboy. <<<sigh>>> Meh.
