What happened to chicken swarma platter at Tangerine Cafe?

Just came back from Epcot and ordered one of these as I do every year. The side were the same and great but the chicken was different. Instead of being shredded it consisted of off colored slices of something that looked pre fabricated or like chicken spam!!!!:scared1: Gross! What happened?

Interesting since I got the chicken wrap on December 13 and I had massive problems with it. I thought they were mostly due to the entire thing, including the meat, being pretty much arctic cold. I didn't think it was because of a difference in the meat but it could have been. Because it was a wrap I didn't exactly observe the meat.

I've always loved it prior to that but I won't be ordering anything at Tangierine other than the veggie platter from now on.

I ordered it last Jan and the meat was horrible!!! This used to be a favorite place of ours, but after that experience it quickly came off our must do list.

I hope Tangierine gets better. We were there in July and had the combo chicken/lamb platter and the meat was the shredded chicken the OP mentioned they had there before. I sure hope it gets better again. We loved this place and would be disappointed if it has changed for the worse.

I have never had one "shredded", but in thin strips like you would have in a gyro sandwich. :confused3

I agree. That is what it has been like when I have eaten there, and that is consistent with all of the pictures I have seen from the past as well. It is sliced off a large flame rotisserie kabob type of thing like a gyro.

That is how the meat was sliced for me also when I had it, however the meat itself tasted horrible, and it was way over dry. Like I said in an earlier post, I used to love this dish and this place. The dish my DH had, which was the meatball platter was also disappointing. We will be skipping this place this coming trip. Maybe it was an off time when we went, but it was not good at all.

We were so disappointed for same reasons posted :confused3

Couldn't wait to get the platter....tried to convince ourselves it was good, but we failed.

Either something changed in the quality, the way it's listed on the menu, or we ordered it incorrectly, but the platter was definitely not what we had in years past. I am particularly picky, as a fond eater and maker of Middle Eastern foods!

I hope the mistake is mine, because Morocco/Tangerine Cafe has always been a favorite. It could very well be because I so rarely eat meat anymore (occasionally I will have white meat chicken or turkey but that is it), so my tastes were just not attuned to it.

Wow! Tangierene is a fave of ours, too & the Shawarma platter is what 2 out of 3 of us order. Hoping they do improve.
Did you notice on the updated (Nov 2008) that the shawarma platter isn't on it?

I was just there a couple of weeks ago and had the chicken shawarma platter. I really enjoyed it, but it was my first time there. The chicken wasn't shredded - it was more like slices. It was a little on the dry side, but the sauce was good and made up for the slightly dry chicken.

It's funny that you mention this OP. We ate there this past November and I thought something was off about it. Now I know exactly what it was. That chicken was weird!! Everything else was fine, including the hummus, yum! But that chicken had something wrong with it. I just couldn't figure out what was wrong with it though. Thanks for clearing it up. I guess anyone going soon needs to ask if they are getting real chicken or chicken spam?!! :confused3

A "real" schwarma uses some type of meat (usually lamb) compressed into a dense meatloaf that is put on a vertical rotisserie and cooked from the outside in. Thus the meat is sliced off into thin slices from the outside. Some pieces are cooked more than others depending on when they are sliced off, which causes a difference in coloring. The shredded chicken you were getting wasn't the authentic schwarma chicken. The "spam" chicken is closer to a real schwarma...and it's delicious. :)

Sorry, but I just had it and the chicken spam was disgusting. It was dry, strangly colored and an awful consistency. I wasn't the only one complainimg and /or not eating it. Blahhhhhhh:guilty: :crazy2: :crazy2:

Actually, what I love is when the meat is very crusty (i.e., like an end cut on prime rib). That would be drier than the inside cuts, but the flavor is so awesome. I did prefer the lamb to the chicken, but the chicken was fine.

We try to eat there every trip and I don't ever remember getting any kind of shredded chicken but the schwarma that others have posted about that's more like gyro meat. Is that the "spam" you're talking about? :confused3

Gyro is ground seasoned and compressed loaf, shwarma is pounded, seasoned and stacked ...

I only eat the lamb ( i can't eat restaurant prepared chicken, at all, ever).. and the lamb is to die for.
