What forms of non-photo id are valid at the airport?

Yes sir. Looks similar to a driver license. Photo and all, and official which is what is important. He has other forms of non photo id, and school Id, but I just didn't want to take the chance or have the hassle of getting someone who was very strict at the airport.

I live in NY and have a non driver's ID. I can tell you that they DO not have a photo on the temporary. It is the same as the interim driver's license they issue you. Just a piece of paper to hold up until you get your ID in the mail. I can also say it doesn't take 5-6 weeks to arrive. More like 2-3.

Here in NJ, you can get a photo id at the county clerk's office. They take your picture and print the card right there on the spot. I needed birth cert, ss, and proof of address for dd to get one. I think it was $10. It worked fine for her flying on Spirit, United and Delta.

Not sure if you have that availability, but couldn't hurt to call them.

I know it won't help you out now, but I'd suggest that everyone just get a passport. My experience is that it's the one no-hassle form of ID anyone will accept, anywhere. I use mine all the time domestically as well as internationally. I imagine that soon enough the regs will tighten up again and you'll need one anyway. Just my take on this.

Get a passport. They are good for 10 years. They are also good when you get a job and have to prove you are a US Citizen.

If you are worried, I'll point out that there is no requirement to have any id to get on a plane. People lose their wallets/purses on vacation all the time and still are able to fly home. They have to do a lot of explaining, and get the heck screened out of them, but eventually most get on the plane (the ones who show up 30 minutes before a flight don't.)

As others have said, bring everything you can and get there early. But she will eventually get on board.

Thanks for all of the replies! She's going to try to get to the DMV next week (they're not open weekends) and hopefully get the card in time for our trip. If not, looks like we'll just have to deal with security.

Completely agree, and with some of the restrictions on passport issuance, you'll be less likely to be scrutinized for security reasons.

Passports work out to be around $10 a year, well worth it!

My girlfriend (19) is stubborn and refuses to learn to drive, and therefore doesn't have a driver's liscense or permit or anything of the sort (don't get me started... :headache:). There's not enough time to go get a non-drivers id either.

Anyway, my question is, since she doesn't have government-issued photo id to present at the airport for check-in, I've seen that two forms of non-photo id would be acceptable. However, I haven't seen what accepted forms of non-photo id count as? Would a social security card and birth certificate work? Or something combined with a college photo id perhaps? :confused3

Thanks for the help!

PS: We're flying out of either JFK or La Guardia in NY on either Delta or JetBlue (still figuring out what the cheapest/most convenient option is). Don't know if that makes any difference.

she can use her college ID she can use it . the only thing if she has no ID she can FLY but only if she goes through (SSS) secoundary security scering it a real but she can still fly . I would say go to DMV and get a no drivers ID tehy will issues her a paper ID card this will help !

as far as a bring social security card and birth certificate it does not hurt .

How did she register for college, get a job, get a bank account, sign up for anything, or do anything with some sort of state ID or driver's license?? I've had to have a government ID since I was 15 years old. I'm perplexed. I know that's completely unhelpful, but it seems like she really needs some sort of form of identification even if she never drives or flies.

I wonder about this too as even my 15yo grandson has a state issued picture ID from DMV which he has gotten since he was 6 and renewed every 2 years. This is off topic but, I still can't believe that some states are so far behind the curb on things like this. I live in a small town in WV and if we want our license or state ID, we just go to the DMV office and apply w/SS card and utility bill and they take our picture and give us the ID all within one hour (depending on crowd). Heck you even get a picture on your learner's permit too which is laminated. They don't do temporary IDs because you get your permanent one right away. With a major state like NY, I can't believe they don't do it the same way, what's that all about. This has been the same in VA and MD too as long as I've been an adult (a long time). If she came to my work, she would never be allowed in. You can't get into a federal building without a state issued picture ID. I would suggest you get a passport or passport card, it only took ours 10 business days to arrive. Good luck, but it sounds like you have plenty of time to get one or the other. I think the Real ID card will solve this problem in the future (I've had mine for a year now through work).
