Hi there,
Our holiday is coming up so soon, and I'm just thinking about food... we aren't doing dining plan as it still doesn't quite work out for us, and I'm trying to decided whether to bring breakfast cereals with us?

What is available in the Mara? We only stayed 2 nights at AKL pre having children and it's a bit different with a DS 5 and DS 10 months. We are staying in a DVC 1 bed villa, and so plan on eating some things in the room.

We've stayed mostly at SSR before and remember that in the main eating place and shop it's possible to buy boxes of cereals, and some meal type things to cook in the room... is there a place to buy this kind of thing at AKL? Also do they serve things like Oatmeal, small boxes of cereal at the Mara?

Thanks in advance :goodvibes

They do have some of those things but you may want to look into a grocery delivery service as well such as Garden Grocer. Depending on how long your stay is, buying groceries in the store and at the Mara can definitely add up quickly as the prices are so much higher than they would be at an off property supermarket etc.

Or, if you are renting a car, just plan a short stop before you hit your resort to pick up your necessesities. But I recommend Garden Grocer..

Thank you... we tried the garden grocer before, but I got really confused by the items we were buying - UK / US names and quantities and got most of it wrong.. tiny loaves of bread and vast quantities of cheese etc! LOL. I will probably bring some cereals with us... It's such a shame the DP just doesn't work for us (and we never get it free with DVC) sigh x

It seems silly to bring over cereal from England...I would say if you are staying a week or less buying your cereal from the store or from the Mara would work. I have friends from England who come over for 2-3 weeks and I thought that would be different (and expensive)...

You don't have to say, but can I ask why the DP doesn't work for you? Even the QS one?

Didn't realize you were DVC members, we are too, this trip we're getting the TIW card. We've used it before and it's great!

Go over to the AKL thread and ask someone to post photos of the Mara breakfast menu. And I know for sure I saw it at one point on the easywdw website.

Keep in mind you will also have the Zawadi marketplace which will have milk, cereal (full sized boxes), frozen foods, cheese, bread, etc. with the DVC rooms, they have a mini grocery section. Think I saw pics of those too on both of those websites. Much easier than dragging it across the pond!

We were here a couple of weeks ago and to be honest they have a great choice .. Breakfast has all the hot options and also fruit platters ,all breads ,cereals, toasts and drinks available.
We stayed for 4 nights and we purchased the refillable mugs which were great for the kids.
I don't think you will be disappointed ..
Have fun

How does TIW work? I think that dh looked into it, but not everywhere was included?

We costed up the dp, and it came in more expensive, mainly because we wouldn't eat 2 hot meals a day... the qs meals are too big for us as a light lunch, we would eat a sandwich at home (which we will do when we are over there), and ds1 is very fussy eater. we spent a long time looking at menu's and trying to work out where we would eat. The QS didn't work either cause we want to do a bunch of character meals so we need the main plan for that... which was even more money. I think as the kids get older and eat more it would work.. but at the moment we'd be paying for food we wouldn't eat.

We are in Orlando for 18 days... doing the last 5 over in a seaworld hotel though as ds1 is a huge sea creature fan and we didn't have quite enough points to stay as long as we wanted in DVC.

You will be right next door to the Kidani villas, and there is a gift shop/store there, too. Not sure if it's the same items, though.

The Mara menu that has been linked shows the quick service items that you can order. The "grab and go" items aren't on the menus, but Mara does have them. Also, both Jambo and Kidani have gift shops that sell basic groceries for villa guests such as bread, milk, etc. so you can make meals in your villa. All of the resorts with DVC villas tend to have a pretty similar selection of items. You might want to ask on the AKL thread if someone can post photos of what grocery type food is available at the gift shops and what grab and go items are at Mara.

If you don't have any luck there are threads for some of the other DVC resorts that have grocery pictures. About half way down this page is the Beach Club Marketplace offerings:
