What exciting itineraries have you sailed?

We have only sailed Bahamas and Alaska. Totally different vacations for sure, and love them both. My question is: Is there any other destinations you would recommend for families that offer the same type scenic beauty and adventure that Alaska does? Can’t wait to start planning our next family outing. Thanks for the recommendations!

The only itinerary that is similar to Alaska is a Norway fjords cruise. You’ll have limited open sea cruising, ports with little to visit outside of nature-oriented activities (meaning no major tourist attractions like castles and museums) and beautiful scenery on non-port days. To this day, it is our favorite cruise after our British Isles one.

Any other European cruise will be very different than anything you did before. It will involve sailing from a foreign port, possibly including a few days of travel prior to the cruise, and be port-intensive. You are usually off the ship most days for long hours. Cruises sailing from Southern California, Texas, NOLA and Florida are all very similar.

I was on The Magic Norwegian Fjords 2022 and I am writing my trip report here https://www.disboards.com/threads/s...-2022-updated-eidjford-norway-port-day.392677

Norway is similar but not the same as Alaska. Norway does not have the same sea wild life or the same land wild life as Alaska. Norway has mountains, lakes, waterfalls and Viking history. Many of the ports are far in land from open water so there is a long sail in in the morning and a long sail out in the evening on the fjords. Due to how far north Norway is, sunset is approx 10pm in the summer, with sunrise approx 6am. Many of the ports are small villages at the base of mountains. Norway and other Northern Europe cruises sail from England or Denmark. The % of children on the Norway and Northern Europe cruises is far lower than Caribbean and Bahama cruises.

if you want scenery, Norway or Norway/Iceland is your best option. If yiu want port intensive and an overview of European cities, do a Med cruise. If you want lots of sea days, do a transatlantic. Our next cruise is the transpacific from Honolulu to Sydney. 14 days, only 3 stops. That’s heaven for us. And we will not be jet lagged once we get to australia because Disney changes the time almost every night.

Not on DCL but last year we did NCL's Pride of America, the only R/T Hawaiian Island Cruise. The ship was nothing special but it was just fine for what we needed. It served as hotel, transportation, and most food. The ports and excursions were amazing. The star of this cruise is the islands, not the ship. When I cruise DCL I feel the opposite. ;)

We have fully enjoyed all of our Disney cruises! I agree that the closest feel to Alaska would be Norway. We did a Scotland, Iceland, Norway cruise that had two ports in Norway. Over the past few years it seems that Disney has had less ports in Norway. We have experienced a lot of different things in all of the ports on our cruises in Europe. Highly recommend any of them. Look over the ports, and what might be interesting to you right family. Happy cruising.

Based on your wording - are you looking for scenery that actually is similar to Alaska OR a cruise that is something different than visiting the Bahamas, Mexico, etc…?

My take on AK cruises is that the environment is very refreshing and beautiful and that it offers a fairly port-intensive, excursion heavy experience.

Just recently I was reading that a big mistake is expecting a Norwegian fjords cruise to be a similar landscape. Biggest takeaway was the fjords themselves - that you spend a long time getting in/out of each fjord - and even one If the big cities (that one wasn’t even in a fjord).

Are you hoping to sail within sight if land as opposed to a lot of time with nothing but ocean?

Looking for a cooler temp (the crisp air of AK) v. the often hot/humid Caribbean?

If it is a vacation that offers excitement over just relaxing (making it more like a good vacation hotel base) - try to find an Itinerary that has few Sea Days. I would avoid a Transatlantic, Panama Canal or many of the Repositioning cruises.

I have had great experiences with an 11-night Med and an 8-night Southern Caribbean. Both had very few Sea Days (but those are needed if time in port is long - especially in the Med.

British Isles cruises are highly recommended (on my wish list). My sister and many Disney cruisers will suggest Princess cruises for these itineraries. If you don’t need Disney characters and decor, this can be a more economical way to cruise this area. Their ships are not so focused on bells and whistles, but provide a consistent level of service.

I find the best cruise similar to Alaska is another Alaskan cruise! ☺️. We are booked for my 6th next Spring. I have not repeated ships nor itineraries. This next one is a 10-night, picked to include full days in each port we visit (several itineraries have late arrivals in one or more ports), including a full day (10am - midnight) in Victoria BC.

That stop is made to meet a US requirement for AK cruises RT out of Seattle. It is usually met by a 4-hour stop late night. Our day has enough time for a visit to Butchart Gardens and an Orca whale watch cruise - with hours left over.

A one-way cruise to/from AK can include some land vacation time in the Last Frontier. We did a 12-hour train ride from Anchorage to Fairbanks after a Northbound route.

I am definitely not discouraging a Norwegian Fjords cruise! It‘s another one if my dream cruises - and also not in Disney. Disney is my cruise home, but it suits my needs better if there will be a lot of time spent on the ship. Port-intensive: I would rather spend my money on excursions.

The next best similar option after Alaska is a land vacation In New Zealand!

Have fun with a lifetime of travel. So much to see!

If you want to stick with Disney, then the Northern Europe cruises are as close as you'll get to Alaska in terms of atmosphere and feel. Disney isn't always known to be super creative with their sailings.

Agreeing with Norway. Alaska and Norway are my top two cruises. The sail in/outs in Norway are just gorgeous.

What I have sailed that might be exciting:
  • Alaska
  • The Southern Caribbean. I really enjoyed the "ABC" islands.
What I'd like to sail:
  • Panama Canal
  • Egypt
  • The Med
  • World Tour

Just fabulous advice everyone, exactly the information I was looking for. We love the scenery, wildlife, photography of it all and the lovely towns to enjoy the Alaskan way of life and the exciting excursions. So I guess I was interested to know if there was another destination like that, back to Alaska we go! Although Iceland/Norway is on my bucket list, most of the family kids are too small to just enjoy the scenery. Thanks for all the great responses.

Our favorite cruise is probably the Panama Canal one from Miami to San Diego. Norway is beautiful and we did enjoy it. I've been to Alaska on two land vacations and for two climbing trips but haven't done a cruise there yet. Other cruises that were special for us were two DCL cruises to the Baltic that were very port intensive. We repeated the cruise just because there was so much to see and we're really glad that we were able to experience St. Petersburg twice since we'll never get back there again. Now we're looking forward to our 14-day DCL cruise from Honolulu to Sydney this coming October.

I think the first time on any new itinerary is always exciting. If scenic beauty is your thing I’d do Northern Europe, or Iceland Norway. If your looking for something closer to home than Southern Caribbean. The Caribbean can be very beautiful too especially the more Southern you go.
