What exactly is the Penny machines?

i hear everyone talking about it, but why do kids love it so? How many machines are around?

I have two boys 4 & 6. I really want to make this a magical trip - our first family trip! I'm thinking of either doing the penny thing or the pin trading - what do you think boys of this age would enjoy better? My older son is more outgoing and would definitly talke with everyone but not so much my little guy, BUT my older one loves to collect things.

any suggestions???? which is less time consuming????

My guess, being new at this myself, is that the pennies would be less time consuming. It seems pretty straightforward vs pin trading which - if your kids are like mine - could be pretty dragged out by an indecisive child! We got a roll of quarters and a baggie full of shiny pennies for the penny presses. now if I knew where they were!

I would go with the pressed pennies. They are cheaper than the pins. the pennies are 2 quarters and a penny. there are a ton of them around but you can get as many as you want. they have them at every resort and every park and they are all different characters and designs. its fun to hunt out where they hide them......

if you go with pins you need to start with at least 5-6 pins. most pins at Disney start at around $8.00 a pin.( at least they did the last time i was there)

Yes they are Characters at a location or a ride ,even in a costume.

Shiny are better before the press but not necissary.


My biggest tip is to get a TUBE of mini M&M's .Eat them all or dump out.

Then fill the tube with 2 quarters and 1 penny and repeat .It holds a lot and you don't have to bundle around looking for change.This makes it very time efficant.

Both pressed penny and pins are fun. But pin are really a lot more expensive. Pressed pennys $.51 I plus go ahead and buy the book to keep them in I think it was only $7, Pins prepurchased as cheap as $3 or less each at Disney $6-10 each, plus a lanyard for each child about $6 for plain or $10-14 for ones with charms on the end.

With pins there are 2 approaches trading and collecting.
Pin collecting is the way to go if yours are shy. Think of it more as few special ones to keep forever to commerate your trip, not as the trading game. While at Disney pick up the kids favorate charaters or ride pins anything they really enjoyed while they were there and no trading!

Trading requires that your child be willing to interact with others. Usualy adult cast members are easist to trade with for kids. If you think you are going to trade prepurchase a lot of pins on ebay or an internet broker with the idea of trading for the ones the kids like better when you get there. You will be able to find a thread with some internet brokers here on the dis.

Pressed pennys (& pressed quarters) are a lot cheaper and every bit as fun! And since it is a collection there are no issues with trading and talking to strangers. There are lots of penny machines here is a list of from allears
http://allearsnet.com/btp/pennylist.htm Buy the holder book while you are there it it is a 3 way fold so it is great so they don't get lost in moms pocket while you are there and displays them when you get home. Go get a roll of quarters and pennys at home. If you can't get new pennies, you can polish them up by leaving them in keptchup over night. I like to put them in the Mini M & M bottles if you can find them, put 2 quarters 1 penny, 2 quarters 1 penny till it is full. Or some people use film canisters or even a zip lock baggie anything for easy axcess and correct change.

Just do what ever (or both) that will make your kids happy.
