?? I'm just curious if it ever baffles anyone else besides me. I see people use it so frequently. I always read it as "Just kidding", but sometimes that doesn't make any contextual sense. I even remember one user who would put it at the end of everything he said, so I just assumed he was never telling the truth .

Well, I see it as a wink. The same way I'd wink if I was being a smarty pants but not trying to be hurtful IRL. So, that's the way I take it when I see it in a post--that someone is speaking tongue in cheek.

I agree. Also, kind of when you are referring to an inside joke and don't want to post it out loud.

Those all sound like times that I would understand what you are implying - inside jokes, kidding around, making fun of yourself (which is the only time I'll use the or ). But sometimes people seem to be using it for none of those reasons - no "wink wink, nudge nudging" seems to be implied .

It doesn't really matter . I just take smilies kind of literally since they are pretty much the only means of facial expression or body language here. But I am in general a very literal person .

I use it all the time. its like a "just kidding" or a sarcastic nudge. I'm a sarcastic person, so I tend to come off snarky. With that, people know when I'm kidding.
