If you are looking at a listing of teachers and after each one it lists B.S. (in whatever field) from XXX or Masters, etc.......then you come upon a teacher and it just says diploma. What does this mean?

It might mean they don't have a degree in teaching... but they're certified to teach? I'm guessing here.

I think certain places award certificates... in some places, if you pass the licensing test in the state I think you are certified to teach even without a formal teaching degree. I'm in the B.S. degree program at my college for Elementary Education and I know several students in the classes with me are Paraprofessional students... they'll graduate, but not with a degree. I'm not entirely sure what they can do with it once they finish, though. Sorry!

I have seen where they put it that way for several reasons.

One reason is that the teacher might not want her college and disicpline listed for a number of reasons.

Another might be like a PP said, they have a subject matter diploma, but not a BA or BS. (I have seen that when say, a teacher is teaching aircraft maintence, he has diplomas certified by the FAA, and so forth.)

Another reason is that the teacher had not given the school the OFFICAL transcripts of her degree by the time the printers needed the information. Rather than leave it blank, they elected to put a generic term, but did not want to say he/she had the degree without verification. (yes, some teachers have falsified their credentials and/or degrees)
