What does the room steward do?

I have never cruised and am just curious - what does the room steward do exactly? I have gotten a few clues from posts on different subjects - but I was just wondering - what are their functions?

Are they a housekeeper with extra attentiveness?

Besides the fact that most of them make great towel animals to entertain you.....

They turn down your bed in the evening and leave you your chocolate on the pillow. If you need to use the upper berth and/or murphy bed, they will unfold these from the wall for you. Likewise they will convert the couch into a bed if needed.

In the morning, after everyone has left the room, they will clean it, refresh towels, make the beds and re-stow the beds, empty the trash.

I think they also have some additional duties around the ship in the evening, but that they rotate these duties (such as room service devliery).

They spoil you totally! I tried to pack my room steward in my luggage for the trip home, but we didn't make it thru customs!!
:D

They also "freshen" up the rooms several times per day and work very hard!!! They deserve the recommended tip and then some!

On our trip on the Wonder last year, our cabin steward left a little stuffed animal on my son's bed. He tidied up the cabin, turned down the bed, changed the couch into a bed for my son and was just generally awesome! He was always stopping by asking if there was something he could help with.

OK, so how do they know if you are in the room or not? And what if you don't want them fussing with the room in and out all day?

I prefer to have my room made up in the morning while I am at breakfast, and then be left alone until I go to dinner, when I want the room tidied a bit (fresh towels in, trash out, and beds turned down). Should I just inform the steward of this the first day?

Thanks!

Anne

I would just let him/her know of your wishes and cabin routine. I am sure they will be accomodating. They usually introduce themselves as soon as they see you go to your cabin. They always seem to be accessible and in the hallway.

You will have a PRIVACY PLEASE hanger on your door that you can switch to SERVICE STATEROOM PLEASE. Just hang it appropriately and your cabin steward will do his/her best to accommodate you.

They are WONDERFUL, hard-working folks and I have always been exceedingly impressed by the cabin attendants. Mine always seem to have had a way of cleaning the cabin just when I asked, even when I had the huge 1 BR suite that required extra work. :)

Within the first day your cabin attendant will have your routine down pretty well. Ours didn't typically come into the cabin after the morning cleaning since he knew that we were in and out during the entire day. On some mornings when spouse and I would get up early with the kids still in bed, we would just mention to Samuel on our way out that the kids would probably be sleeping late.

They also know which seating you have for dinner, so your beds will get turned down while you are at dinner.
