What does "She's sure let herself go" mean?

This thread has really let itself go.

Yes, this thread is totally stupid at this point.

I find it ridiculous that some people have mentioned that they would not be friends with people who have made this comment...Hello, I guess they live in a perfect world, and only have perfectly nice friends who never say anything mean.

If I dumped every friend who had ever made a catty remark, I would not have friends. But I'm glad there are those on the Dis (luvOrlando) specifically, who would dump their friends because they said something catty. Whatever.

Let yourself go could mean a lot of things.

I'm really surprised that anyone thinks "she's sure let herself go" could possibly be an expression of caring about someone's well being. To me, it has such a negative connotation that it can only be catty.

I think something like, "Mary just doesn't look herself lately at all--do you think something's going on with her?" is the expression of concern that real friends would use.

Exactly. There are many ways to express care and concern without sniping that someone has let themselves go. I have never, ever heard the phrase in question uttered with kindness.

I did get a good giggle about the idea that it's judgmental to think less of a person for saying something mean. That's the most ridiculous bit of circular logic I've heard in a while. Imagine! Looking down my nose at someone who goes around saying rude things behind someone's back! What IS the world coming to? :rotfl2:

I'm not dumping friends because they routinely talk about other women behind their backs. I'm "letting herself go". :rotfl: Don't need, or want, that kind of drama in my life. Got enough, thank you.

These all may be reasons why a person has let themselves go but it wouldn't change the underlying fact that they did so.

A person may sweat because they are nervous, scared, hot, or running a fever. Those are reasons (or causes) that don't change the underlying fact that the person is sweating.

A voice of sanity. The truth is sometimes just the truth. A peron's motivation in speaking the truth can only be guessed/infered in light of the conversation and circumstances.

She sure let herself go....hmmm this makes me think of marrige...lmao

Sorry but I notice more big woman with skinny guys these days. I think once a woman gets married they tend to care less about their apperance because they already bagged them a man.
