Back in '03, when my dd was just turned 10....we were sitting on our beds at WDW. She had been feeling really sick so we went back to the resort with some teen mags in hand so she could rest. After about an hour or so, she turns over and says..'Mom, what does gay mean?? Cause you always tell me to figure out a word's meaning by looking at how it's used in the sentence and that just isn't working here....the kids are making fun of someone and telling him he's gay. I don't think he's happy...so what is he??'
Oh my....here it is. I told her that there are a lot of people out there that prefer to be with others of the same sex.....like a guy wants to be with another guy instead of a woman, and there are women who want to be with oter women and not men. And that they even get married and adopt kids. She absorbed that and just said 'oh'.
I told her that there was nothing wrong with that...that she even had family members that are gay. She was astonished. I told her her aunt was a lesbian and her uncle was also gay. Her response??? "Well, I guess that's why Uncle Barry only brings guys to the house with him!!!.
Simple is always best.
