What does everyone think about receipt checkers?

My DD11 sets off that alarm every time. No clue why. Usually she gets waived through, but once at B&N the cashier picked up that square thing they lay the books on and went over every inch of D's body to get the dang thing to stop ringing. We were all laughing so hard (including the cashier).

Was she wearing a new jacket? sometimes there is a security sensor in the pocket. Happened to me every time I wore a certain jacket. I bought it online, so the security tag hadn't been deactivated. Drove me nuts until finally a security guard at a store in NYC told me what it was. Took it out--problem solved!

Once at a Costco, the receipt checker actually caught that I had been double-charged for an item. I was impressed that he picked up on that with the fast scan of receipt and cart that they do. Saved me from losing about twelve bucks, because I probably would have never caught it.

Me too. They are also checking on the cashier, it's not all about me!

I think it is a waste of time. Seriously, shoplifters are not going to put extra items in their bag or shopping cart - they're going to hide it.

Agreed. Waste of time and it's annoying honestly.

I actually had the opposite thing happen to me at Costco today. We went to self check out and the machine indicated that we needed to renew our membership, which we did. The receipt checker kept looking at the receipt and looking back in our buggy and counting. He actually thought WE had forgotten to put something in there because the receipt showed more items than we had, then he realized that it was a membership we had paid for.

I guess maybe this could be a deterrant for someone that was going to shoplift, but other than that, it's kind of useless. There is no way the Sam's receipt checker can count how many items are in my overflowing cart when I'm leaving the store just by "eye-balling" my cart.

Well, we only have a Walmart here that "checks" receipts. I do NOT stop. In the past I have gotten yelled at and keep on walking out the door. I refuse to prove that I am honest.........if they think I have stolen something, then they better have proof!

I've had them attempt to actually stop me and I just keep walking and tell the person quietly that they better know the law before they touch me. And I keep walking.

When Walmart started this, I made a vow that if I was stopped and refused exit, then I would turn around and make them refund every item in my cart!

Nope. Not gonna happen.

Our Walmart does not check receipts yet, but if they do, I will be another one who just keeps walking. I have absolutely mortified my daughter a few times by refusing to stop if the alarm goes off as we walk out the door. When they ask me stop, I just politely tell them "no thanks." It really seems to befuddle them. As a previous poster stated, you are not required to-I checked with my brother the cop. Seriously, I know I haven't stolen anything. If you think I have, have me arrested. Otherwise, the item is mine and you are wasting my time.

And yes, I understand how much money stores lose from shoplifters. I worked retail for many, many years. OTOH, my office was upstairs next to the security guy with the camera, and more times than I can count, I would see the guys' cameras trained on some portion of the female anatomy. Different scenario, but still aggravates me to this day.

I recently bought a Wii game, a second controller and some inkjet cartridges at a store that does receipt checking. I was not paying much attention and they checked it and went on. I got to the car, looked at it and realized that my receipt was much less than I expected. I checked and they had not rung up the Wii game!! I got all the way to my car WITH my receipt checked!! Of course, I went back in and pointed out the error and then I had to stand in line at customer service for 15 minutes. Why? I have no idea why. Why couldn't I just go through the checkout and pay for it??

It doesn't really bother me to be honest. It takes 2 seconds and I'm out the door. If the alarm sounds and you keep walking, the police that are there (they hire off duty cops to keep an eye on things, they're in uniform and everything) will follow you and find out what's going on.

Our Walmart stopped checking reciepts and hired Police Officers to stand in front of the doors. I guess checking the reciepts wasn't keeping people from walking out with those flat screens.

They have a right to validate what is in your cart.

It's a stretch to apply "innocent until proven guilty" as you aren't being accused of anything.

Yup. Happened to me this morning at BestBuy (which prompted this thread). I paid for my items less than 10 feet from the receipt check guy and he still asked me for my receipt.

This happened to me a couple weeks ago at Best Buy. This was a small store with only one checkout and he was only a few feet away

Glad I didn't pull that non sense when the alarm went off after taking my daughter shopping for new cloths. It wasn't walmart but the alarm still went off. If I hadn't stopped I would have gotten all the way home only to realize that the girl forgot to take off one of those tags, you know the ones that if you don't have a special tool, it gets ink all over the garment. With your attitude it would have served you right.

I think it's because of people who don't stop for the workers when alarms go off that the police are more of a presence at stores these days. Since they're uniformed officers, you do have to stop, if you don't.. that's probable cause to give chase, in my opinion.

That's like saying you shouldn't have to show your ticket to the ticket-taker at a sporting event just to prove that you're allowed to enter the venue.


You'd be surprised at how bold people are. They WILL walk right out the door with something. I've worked in retail. I've seen it happen.

Apples and oranges. You purchase a ticket knowing that showing it is how you will be admitted in to that particular event. Once you purchase something in a store, you own it, even before you walk out the door.

My theory is that they aren't actually checking your purchases, but just delaying you for a few moments, so that if the cameras did catch you doing something shady, security has time to meet you before you leave the store.

Not getting nasty, she was the one stating they are wasting her time and no thanks. She was acting all holier than thou. It takes just a minute and it could have been a mistake like I explained. Adn with that attitude I stand by what I said.
