What do your little children wear (clothing) while visiting WDW?

Do your children visit WDW decked out in Disney themed clothing? Or do they just wear regular every day clothing?

Etsy is pulling me in fast & hard... so many adorable Disney customs! I could seriously buy something for the girls to wear each day. Of course, that would mean $$$$ and DH would not be too thrilled about that. I know for sure my oldest girl will be getting an Ollie Girl dress to wear on her birthday while we do BBB and a princess meal. And I'll probably get one for younger DD to wear, just because, even though she'll be too young for BBB and probably not "into" the princesses yet.

Some days I feel like my daughter is the only little girl NOT wearing a hot, itchy princess dress at the parks. But, as much as my DD5 likes to dress up, she is much happier being comfortable. On our last trip, she usually wore shorts and a princess shirt (at the time, she had several). I did buy some sparkly hair gel and put her hair up in a sparkly "do" one day which she enjoyed.

The simple answer is YES!!! My DD has a bigger working wardrobe than most Disney Characters.;) All comfy cotton and made by me. She loves the attention she gets. And I love that the outfits are washable.

We don't do princess costumes for more than an hour or two (usually when we're doing dinner with the princesses, or right after we do BBB)....mostly because we go in Sept and it's just too stinking HOT!!

I like to make shirts for the girls (nothing fancy, but some great ideas over on the DISigns boards). Most of them are iron ons that we printed off our own computer!! I'm going to buy some superfine glitter to give them pixie dust pony tails and/or updos this time (we're not spending money again on BBB).

You can do fun stuff for them without it breaking your wallet!!

Enjoy the planning, and your trip!

I used to stock up on disney store t-shirts when they were on sale. My daughter had some princess dresses from there but they are not as much fun to play in. I have discovered sewing and it is fun! I make causal fun stuff for my daughter that she loves. This is what I made for her birthday:

I also have made her cotton versions of princess dresses (kind of like Ollie Girl), a lot less itchy:

If you check out the disboutiquer thread on this board some of the participants sell too. Good luck convincing DH: whenever I get home from the fabric store I tell him how much we are saving by me doing it myself rather than buying from ebay or etsy but it doesn't quite convince him! :lmao:

I'm not necessarily speaking about COSTUMES, but more of CUSTOM made (handmade) items that are Disney theme.

I agree that I don't think it'd be very comfortable to wear an itchy hot costume, but a cute cotton custom version (like what I'm speaking about from Ollie Girl) or a cute handmade halter/capri set, or a cute Snow White peasant top (adorable, found on Etsy) paired with a pair of denim shorts, etc. I also have been going through the Disney Store website thinking about ordering a few things to have for our trip next May.

In general we are a non-character clothing wearing family, it's just not my style. But I'm torn between doing a Disney character wardrobe for our vacation; doing some character clothing and some regular clothing, or just all regular clothing except for the custom Ollie Girl dress for DD's birthday.

You will find all kind of clothing at Disney: from little girls in full costumes with accessories to plain t-shirts and shorts. The most popular styles of make your own clothing on this board seem to be those who make their own outfits from scratch (like Cindee and me) and those who make iron ons to put on t-shirts (the DISigns board).

Keep an eye on Disneyshopping.com because they can have great deals. I do make my own customs now but our first few trips I did not sew, or have a girl. And for my boys the t-shirts are great. I have gotten many under $3!

If you can sew a straight line and own a sewing machine, try making something yourself! Here is one set I made for last year's trip.

My DD refuses to wear the itchy princes dresses. We went in Sept and it was too hot and too humid. Mostly she wore disney themed tshirts.

Sorry for the hijack, but I'd love to see what everyone does for their boys. DS#1 is REALLY big into Disney clothing; and since we've lost our local Disney store, we're really limited (Disney Shopping is beyond expensive for Canadians). I've love to know where the mamas on Etsy are getting the fab appliques (templates?) - since Duncan would be all over different Mickey heads. Mind you, I am beyond useless with a sewing machine

My kids' entire wardrobe, from top to bottom (except for shoes) is from Gymboree, so that is what they wear. Nothing different about being on vacation, as it's all about comfort and quality. Disney clothes are very bad quality - we have pretty much stopped buying as no matter where Disney clothes are from - online, outlets or in parks - they are horrible quality, IMHO. She has never worn a Princess costume either in the parks - just her Alice dress that we bought at GF as it's cotton and very comfy. We always go for 2 weeks each July, so kids have to be comfy due to the serious Orlando heat. Although Princess dresses might be cute, they are uncomfortable and hot - just ask my DD who says this sometimes while playing dress up at home. I can't even imagine wearing these costumes or other fussy clothing while in the summer Orlando heat.

Good luck in your shopping - depending upon the ages of your kids, and what time of year you go, the weather will dictate a lot of what is appropriate clothing for your kids to wear.

Have a great trip, Tiger :)

My girls pretty much wear matching shirts every day with khaki or denim shorts (or skorts). I think it looks cute in pictures (I even try to color coordinate DH and I) and I don't fret about stains or special laundering techniques. Usually, they have 3-4 matching Disney t-shirts and a few matching polo type shirts.

We have done princess dresses for princess meals ... I let the girls decide on that. The first year, I just had them in white skorts and pink polos from Target when they met Cinderella. Both of them asked for princess dresses the following year.

But, I tell you, they LOVE sundresses and Chef Mickey's - livndisney's red/white polka dot sundress has me re-thinking my whole stance on customs ... I might have to get my seamstress (my Mom) to make us a couple of dresses like that for our next trip! So, so cute!!

Check out the Disboutique thread. If you read the 1st post you will be able to view the photobucket account. It has lots of pics and great ideas for boys, and girls.

I actually have been going through this thread tonight! I don't think I'd be able to pull off much they have listed (let's just say I totally ruined 3 American Apparel tee's and hubby was LESS than impressed). So, I'm hoping I can show my Mom or MIL, and maybe arm twist them into giving it a try on some cheaper shirts first :headache:

Love the outfits!!!! :thumbsup2 I wish I could sew. :goodvibes

As far as Disney clothing....you may want to look into iron-on patches. You could basically design your own Disney clothing, although with the specials Disney has been running, it may even be cheaper to order some official clothing from the Disney Store online. For iron-on patches, just Google for Disney iron-on patches.

Denise, stephes, cindi, tricia ...sewing is not that difficult and maybe it can be something you can look into....caution: once you start is hard to stop... and it does not have to be complicated either.... we have a designer in the thread known as CarlaC she is one of the most amazing people and makes patterns that anyone, I mean anyone can do even if you never done any sewing ...you can find her patterns at youcanmakethis.com

nothing is as easier as this one ...tank top cut it and add the skirt piece voila a custom outfit in less than 30 min

my point is that you do not need to be intimidated give sewing a try and come join the disboutique thread ( I consider myself kind of new in the thread) the ladies and one gentleman (TOM) they all do amazing stuff and they are all so helpful:grouphug: one big online family , but like I said it is very addictive!!!!:lmao:

I took Disney outfits with me in case my 2 wanted to dress up and regular clothing, both my children son and daughter wanted to dress up everyday, and it worked out well as it was a little cold while we were there, my sons favorite was his Pooh outfit, and my daughter wore a different princess dress everyday, I got all the outfits off Ebay since I did not want to spend alot, we went in December so it worked out really well, lots of people listed stuff in October for Halloween so I got some really cute outfits really cheap, for my son I lucked out at Goodwill with the Pooh outfit that only cost me $2 :thumbsup2 even now both my children love dress up and have played with all the outfits since our trip, and I am hoping some still fit for our trip this year.:cool1:

I usually have custom-made Disney outfits for each day we are in the parks. NOT Princess Dresses. Our last trip was around Christmas, so I also had custom Christmas outfits made:

My girls only wear custom Disney clothing in WDW. They love their sets, I love seeing them in them. They get nothing but attention from cast members and characters. It has gotten us VIP seating at shows, walk up dinner reservations when none were available, and CMs are constantly giving the girls things! Toys, cookies, stuffed animals etc. I don't understand why... but maybe it's because they look so special and it's obvious that we take the extra time to make them unique?
Etsy is a great place to find unique outfits. I can recommend some excellent designers that we have worked with many times. Several of them also can be found on the Dis-Boards.
Do a search on Ebay for Resell or resale Disney custom and you'll find tons of gently used sets that can save you lots of money! Search right in the handmade clothing category.
Have fun with it! Make sure the sets are made of cotton for comfort, that the fabric is prewashed, and are all professionally stitched and finished.
Feel free to PM me if you want some designer recommendations or if you want to see the sets my girls have worn in WDW. I can send you a link.

Oops, found the thread!

I'm a total sewing novice. On a scale of 1-10, how hard are the tank top dresses?
