what do you use to clean the lens? (cleaning cloth question)

OT: you're all making me laugh and I have a toothache :lmao:

I have reached my physical adulthood, who mentioned mental state anyways? :lmao::thumbsup2 I'm some sort of a living Peter Pan :goodvibes

Why do you think we ALL love Disney so much???? :goodvibes

It's been that sort of day. The humor all came at just the right time!

Zeiss (Know who they are?) makes great little wipe "certified" for glasses AND lenses. If it's good enough for Zeiss, it's good enough for me. As others have said, lightly brush FIRST to remove particles and then just remove smudges with the wipes.

50 for $2.99 at Wally-World this week. Picked up 2 packs last night (mostly for my reading glasses. LOL).

Sure do. And I've been having trouble seeing things clearly lately. You think Windex is the answer??? :rotfl2:

Only if you are GREEK!

T-shirt, which is usually microfiber/wicking. No problems in *many* years of doing this.
At home I clean them with lens tissue and lens cleaning fluid (out of pity for the way I treat my lenses the rest of the time).

Certain people (formerly) on this board, who shall remain nameless, used to use their tongues. This is certainly not the recommended method how ever.:lmao:
They're not here any more? Hmm... oh well, the lens licking story lives on in infamy!

Some of us use a "Lens Pen". Here is a link to a mind numbingly boring video that will explain the basic idea of what a "lens pen" is.
I picked one up but have never been particularly impressed with it. Of course, it was an incredibly cheap Chinese knock-off... Pison, I think.

I also keep baby wipes in my bag for cleaning off the LCD screen in the back of the camera. My nose Loves to slime that screen.

I'm going to make my millions inventing a baby wipe attachment that you can wear on your nose while using your camera so that you can save the step of always having to wipe off the nose prints.

Good to see that I'm in good company here. :) Nose marks are always an issue. I always hold the viewfinder up to my left eye, which makes the problem even worse. I think that originally I did that as I could only really squint my right eye closed. I can do either eye now, but it just feels unnatural after all these years of using my left eye... apparently some people keep both eyes open and use their right in the viewfinder, but that seems really wacky to me. :teeth:

Re: t-shirts... I've used mine a few times. Your average t-shirt has been through a bunch of washings and is probably going to be very soft and unlikely to do much damage. The coatings on the glass should be pretty tough; I'm not too worried about those. I definitely have some lenses with some fine scratches in the lens but they are very fine, and just day-to-day dust (on the front element and/or on inside elements) will probably be more of an issue. Besides, as some have said, "lenses are for looking through, not looking at" - you are unlikely to ever notice scratches unless they're pretty severe.

My main microfiber cloth is something called a Spudz; it's a microfiber cloth that tucks into a stretchy "bag" on a clip. I keep it clipped to the left strap of my camera at all times. Plus, it's 18% gray - good for getting the white balance exact. (I rarely use it but it did help on my last trip getting some shots near a window in Columbia Harbour House, where the light was a strange mix of outside sun and inside artificial lights.) Only $7; well worth tossing into your cart on your next B&H or Adorama purchase.

Disney sells almost the exact same thing in a Mickey-logo bag, but it's a smaller cloth. We keep one of those on the wife's camera. :)

I certainly don't do it as the norm, but do sometimes keep my left eye open to follow action that is outside the field of view I want for the shot. That helps me know when to then close the left eye and concentrate on getting the shot. It takes getting used to, but can be helpful. If you are looking through 50mm, it is really easy to do without confusing your brain.

:lmao::lmao: I'm keeping both eyes open (or at least I try to not to keep my left eye tightly closed for a long time) just to not to get premature eye wrinkles!
Whenever wrinkles start to show up I want them to be symmetric in both eyes! lol :lmao::rotfl:

I was trying to provide a cover story for you but now you've outed yourself Again!

Wasn't me... IIRC, Skr8pn was the lens-licker in question. Not sure if I have the username quite correct.

Am I seriously being thrown under the buss even though I'm lazy and haven't been on the boards in a seriously long time? You can all deny it all you want but you know you've done it too and it works great. I do not recommend this process for used lens of unknown origins. :thumbsup2

I shall reward my return with some pics from the AK trek we took back in Jan. But I've got to go home and remember how to post pics first. lol

Well, I tried to cover for you!

We are trying to impress the newbies with our strict adherence to proper protocol!

If they knew that we were really using Sham Wow's and Mr. Clean's magic eraser for our nose grease problems they would abandon this board and go hang out on refillable mugs board or some place nice and friendly like that....

Shh!

I guess I had the spelling correct. That was a quick reappearance. :teeth: I wouldn't have pointed fingers except it sounded like I was being accused... I might lick my lens if some of my Main St Bakery cinnamon roll falls on it, but that's probably it. :lmao:

They work well for scanner glass too.

OK - I am now an officially reformed T-shirt lens wiper.

Based on this thread I bought a Lens Pen. This rascal really works.

Once again I learn something useful from the Photgraphy board, thanks folks!

Did you happen to see a NOSE pen along the way there?? That's the next step as far as I'm concerned.

It's almost as if someone who knows skr8pn alerted him to the recent postings! ;)

The plot thickens!
Can it only be a matter of time before the originator of cleaning the camera sensor with his tongue returns from the great beyond??

Wait.......now you're really confusing me......I thought I was supposed to Windex the sensor..........

No, no, no! First you windex your tongue, THEN you clean the sensor. After all, we have to maintain a sterile environment! Even Photoshop MRSA can't remove Staph infections once the sensor is infected.
