what do you use for your Run/Walk timer?

Doing the Goofy and using the Galloway system for the first time.

I usually use my iPhone with the Nike+ system when I run. Unfortunately there isn't a repeating timer aspect on it.

Is anyone else in this situation? Just wondering what you use? Is there a timer app that you can use at the same time? I already wear a fuel band, so would rather not have to wear a watch if I dont have to.

Thanks for any insight.

Depends on what I am running. Nike's app does let you ask for comments in certain increments- so you can have it talk to you every minute. When I run 1:1, this can work.

I recently changed to distance- Nike can also tell you every quarter mile how far you have gone. Or half mile, or mile, or whatever. I have it set at quarter miles right now. Run a quarter, walk a quarter, and only have to run the Nike app.

If those increments don't work for you, I also have the Seconds Pro app. It can run along with the Nike one so you can still get your mileage, and will beep for you at whatever intervals you set up. When I was doing 30:30 or 2:1 this is the extra app I use. You can make your own intervals and for me it works great.

I tend to go by distance... Run til the Garmin says a mile, then walk a minute. I know that Galloway has a timer on his website that does exactly what you are looking for. I know it repeats at various intervals and it also vibrates. I is waist belt capable so you have no additional think on the wrist to deal with.

thank you both for the quick replies.

Totally forgot about the frequency setting on Nike+

Gonna try that first and go from there.

I love these boards. Just full of good people!:worship:

I use "Interval Timer" that I found for free at the app store for my iPod. You can listen to your music while using this, too.

I can set up the following:

Warm Up
High Interval
Low Interval
Number of Sets (1 High and 1 Low = 1 Set)
Cool Down

I can save different workouts (so I have 5k, Sunday Run, etc). Also, I can set alarm noises for each thing so I know that when the Boxing Ring bell goes off I rest and when the Bird Tweets I run!

The screen will also change colors to differentiate between the sets, but I usually don't watch the screen.

Right now I use Jeff Galloway 5k app (was free not to long ago) to try it out and I use that with my Nike+ GPS app on my iPhone. I have my intervals set to 4 min run 1 min walk in his app so that is nice.

I forgot about the frequency in the Nike+ app as well, so I'll have to look into that. Galloway just put out a half marathon app but it runs 14.99 :( He also has a 10K app about 3.99. I'm trying to hold out for a sale or a reduction or something.

The only thing I don't like about the Galloway 5K app is even though you are doing the run/walk intervals, on the shorter distances or time he counts down at every minute which personally distracts me. It'll start at 30 minutes (for example) and then he will say 29 minutes, 28 minutes, etc. Personally I start doing the math in my head on how many more minutes I have to run and then my form suffers. During the longer distances and longer times in the app the countdown doesn't occur so it is quite strange.

His 5K app has an "improve time" feature where the longest run is about 7 miles (no every minute count-down on that run) so I use that and the 4 mile run quite a bit.

I use RunKeeper. It's free (although it was $9.99 when we got it!) and both my DH and I love it!

I also just downloaded (today) the Galloway 1/2 Marathon app. As previously posted, it's $14.99, but I like the countdown of days aspect. When I ran today, it only counted down in time for the "training" intervals (cadence drills and glides?). For my run intervals (3/1), it just told me when to run and when to walk.

Good luck!

Did you start on day 1 with the Galloway app? I would purchase it if it didn't count down every minute that some runs in the 5k app do. It is so distracting when you are to go out for a 30 minute run and you hear, "29 minutes", "28 minutes", "27 minutes", and so on.

Okay, well, while it didn't tell me yesterday, it did today during my 30-min run. :( Sorry to have spoken so quickly!

That leads me to wonder if it does the countdown only on shorter runs, those that are around 30 minutes or less. And if so why?

I notice on my 5k app that if I do the 4 mile or 7 mile run that every minute countdown isn't there. Strange.
