What do you tip your hair dresser?

Ok, so we have debated how much we spend on: vacations, new/not-so-new cars, babysitters, bikes thumbsup2 ), teacher gifts and things like that...

SO here is my next weird and OT question...What do you tip your hair dresser? I just had my hair done today; my roots rehighlighted and a trim - came to $85 without my tip... Is it a certain percentage that you pay like going out to eat, or do you add a flat tip?

We had this discussion at work this morning. One of my coworkers says that she never tips her hairdresser because they set their own prices. (I know that only applies to salons that rent out their stations, but we are in a small town and that's all there is). I always tip based on how much I love the cut, color or whatever was done, and if I bring DD I tip more since there are two of us. I asked my hairdresser once what was traditional as far and % and I never got a straight answer, she did tell me that I tip great though! (last visit was highlights $30, first time highlights for me, short hair, bob cut, my haircut $15 and DD haircut $15, I wrote the check for $75= $15 tip) We were in and out in about 1 hour, she cut DD while my highlights were highlighting and then cut mine.

As a hairdresser, the tips are usually between $5 and $25 depending on the service received. I have had several clients ask about tipping and I tell them I don't really expect one. I own my own business and all I ask is that they pay my prices. Most will leave a tip anyway. Right now they know that all my tips are being saved to take my boys to Disney in October so they have been quite generous.

My stylist works out of a shop at her home. She only charges $5 per haircut, does a very good job and stays pretty busy. DH, DS, MIL and I usually all get our hair cut at the same time. I usually tip 50%. If she charged more, or the going rate for the area, I might not tip at all - since she does own the shop.

I start from 20% rounded up to the next dollar and then go up from there if I'm especially happy with it.
I use a salon that is not owned by the stylist cutting my hair, and they definitely rely on tips to supplement their salary there.

My stylist owns the salon- I pay $110 for a cut, style, and 2 color highlights. I usually tip $20- not quite 20%. When I get just a cut and style, the total is $35, and I give her $7.

Well, I am just sick over what a hairstylist charged me 6months ago for hair color/highlights, cut and blow dry. $200! I almost died. Now I knew I had picked an expensive salon, had my hair done before for half of that! I was going from long to a short hairstyle and really needed it done right BUT it was 200! I tipped 20$ I almost didn't tip at all I was so outraged. Didn't fuss though, it WAS my choice who did my hair and I should have asked first. I am sorry but no hairstyle should cost that much. To the OP- sorry had to vent, felt good, thanks.
But my highlighlights, cut and dry generally run about 120$ and I never tip over 20 except at Christmas.

When I used to get a whole head of lowlights and then a cut, the cost was $140. I normally tipped $35.

I had always heard that the owner shouldn't be tipped, but I read recently that that has changed. Apparantly, now we are to tip the stylist, even if she is the owner.

I'd stick with around 20%- if your cut & style is only $14, then tip $3 on top of that.

I'd feel funny if I didn't tip...even if it was the owner. Somebody told me it is in bad taste to tip the owner, but I wonder how it could be a bad thing to give more $?

I have been going to my same hairdresser since I was a senior in college (1988) she is not only my stylist but my cheerleader, therapist and conscience at times!! She has celebrated my victories, cried right along with me in my darkest hours...

She is going through a rough time right now - money worries and a husband just diagnosed with advanced prostrate cancer. My haircuts are $27.00 (she works for a salon and doesn't make her own prices) and I always give her a $10.00 tip.

Many times when I was having money worries she has cut my hair for free. She also did my hair for my wedding free and cuts my DD2 hair for free (DD2 has hair to the middle of her back)

Sometimes you find blessings in the strangest places....

(usually the person shampooing my hair is not the same as my stylist... so I feel that they deserve a tip too). I like the salon I go to and so I receive great service.... Now I only get highlights once a year as the cost (I think it was $170 last time) scares me

My mom used to work as a hair dresser and was a single mom for a few years. She was planning a trip to take my brother and I to WDW and her clients knew. She got lots of generous tips. One woman gave her $150 and this was about 30 years ago.
