Hi we are going to disney soon and need an idea on what the tipping norm is for porters for luggage, room maid do you tip daily or end of vacation or do you get different maids each day or one assigned to your room for duration of stay, what do you tip in restaurants and taxi drivers etc please help as I have no idea whatsoever thanks in advance for info

Hi

We normally tip each day as the maids can change. We usually tip a minimum of $1 per person.

In restaurants we tip a minimum of 15%.

I'll be interested in the replies you get as I'm not sure if we are tipping correctly.

We normally tip 15% - sometimes more for meals. If we stay in a hotel I leave daily $2 or 3 & I have read it's $1 per bag! It all adds up.

I tip 15-20% for meals. 1 cent left on table of bad, thankfully only once.
Personally I don't tip in the room. A thread a while back was about 50/50 leaving tips in room, suprised me a lot of Americans said they didn't. I will leave any coins at end of stay usually about $5-10.
I carry my own bags and park my own car. I am a Yorkshireman, don't give money away unless I get good value for it.:rotfl2:
Tip whatever you are happy with, not what anyone tells you to do.

This is a dangerous thread and had it been posted on the US board there would already have been hundreds of responses! Each one arguing with the one before.

Truth is i cant tell you what to tip, it is totally personal! I always say that tips should be earned and are not an entitlement of the server/maid etc - although many servers/maids do believe that them just turning up entitles them to 20%/$1 per person.

It is true that servers are paid a low wage and it is expected that by providing 'great' service they will earn extra money. However there are 'officially' all sorts of complicated rules regarding this and employers are required to pay a 'min' wage.

We rarely tip below 15% but should we fell there has been a problem or we have recieved bad service we purposely leave a very small tip - this shows that we understand the etiquitte of tipping but we unimpressed by the service.

15-20% is more than adequate and $1 per person per day is more than exceptable. Bell services is a little more difficult because of size of bags/distance of room etc you just have to decide what you think is correct.

Dont feel 'bullied' into tipping it is totally up to you and how well you feel you have been treated!

I think that's excellent advice, Wayne... :thumbsup2

Thanks for replies very helpful as only been abroad once before and that was 10 years ago lol, we normally tip 10 per cent in this country so think what is suggested above really helps, mant thanks for replies Thanks Karen

A small point, I always tip 15-20% on the whole food bill. My American friends tell me it should be 15-20% of the amount before tax, don't tip on the tax. not that it makes alot of difference but thats what I was told.
If you eat offsite like us 15-20% is nothing, we can eat like Royalty for about $20/head (£10) I have no objection to leaving another £2 for the server.

Brilliant :goodvibes

We tipped the housekeepers at Disney $3 a day which, with hindsight, seems a bit much.

I was so flustered at what to tip the guys who brought our luggage up...we had 3 suitcases and I tipped the guy at AKL $10 and the one at POFQ $5 (it was a shorter trip!).

I get quite nervous when it comes to handing someone a tip...don't know why! :confused3 I suppose I don't want to offend them if its not an acceptable tip. This thread is helpful!

I think it is a personal thing also, have only stayed on-site once and to be honest found the baggage check-in and out almost set up to get $$$ out of you.
From taking your luggage out of the car to actually getting it to the room seemed to involve at least 3 people all of whom expect a tip.
Whilst I do tip I am a Lancastrian ;) and like Wayne I am prepared to carry my own bags - even if it is a long walk.

I don't mind tipping at all, I just prefer to tip for the level of service I receive.

Not stayed onsite for 8 years, it was ASmovies, they never offered to take bags there, just gave us room #. This August 3 nights at POR so lets see how they work there, I bet they dont get their hands on my bags:rotfl2:

Thats the main problem, you don't want to offend. Although I don't want to offend people I will not be bullied into giving tips, I tip if someones has done me a good service. If I am told to do something i will do the opposite, I don't care what I am thought of.
