What do you think of the "drinking" t-shirts that people wear at Epcot?

I have no issue with them, some are very clever and fun. Creativity should be encouraged. Yes Disney is "family friendly" but who dictates what makes up that family. We have our family going in February and everyone is over 21. And for those who are asking about kids reading the shirts, it can encourage great conversation with them about healthy activities, different types of people and humour.

What is so hard to explain? I don't understand the desire to shelter kids from the fact that adults drink alcohol. Now witnessing their behavior when drinking is one thing if it is out of hand, but having a kid read a shirt like that? Just tell them the truth.

I personally would not wear one of those shirts at my age, but 20 years ago with a group of my friends out to have a good time, sure why not.

I think it's more people aggrandizing that behavior when they are drunk and taking pride in being so sloshed or whatever. The cute ones with puns don't bother me so much as the ones that glorify excessive drunkenness.

I find them pretty tacky personally. I know that the parks are for everyone and I've done the drinking around the world with co-workers before, but it doesn't seem like too much to ask to have people wear clothing that is family friendly. It's one thing to reference alcohol; it's another to show characters in various stages of inebriation. But then, I've often been accused of being an 80 year old grump in 39 year old body.

Fellow Grump here, albeit in a 47 year old body!
I think you nailed it perfectly - we are drinkers, but not sloppy. And Tacky is as Tacky does. Go - have fun, drink around the world or have a few cocktails as you enjoy the people watching (my favorite!) But act like an adult who has a clue.
That being said, I'll take the T-Shirts over some of the revealing outfits I've seen on young teenage girls. I always think what adult saw you dressed that way and thought it was appropriate for you to go out the door ?

We were at Epcot a couple of years ago and my daughter asked me about one of the shirts that showed a drunken looking character. I asked her if she understood it (she was 7) and she said I think so and we talked about it. And then she said well that is a silly shirt but it is that person's choice to wear it. And that sums up my entire thought on it. Also, she understands that my husband and I drink and that we are responsible about it and she has not been shielded from alcohol.

So the "I Live in Fantasyland" shirts are out too, since like, if I have a clue, I should know that's not true. Can I still clap for Tinkerbell or are we too old for that?

I agree. Grew up around drinkers. DH and I are not drinkers-once or twice a year we have a beverage.

We did not drink as our kids were growing up and they were not exposed to drinking regularly. But we did have age appropriate conversations about alcohol and the effects of alcohol on people and families. They saw alcoholics in our family get sick which led to their death even after they quit drinking from the effects of alcohol.

But we also love a good punny joke and my middle son always told "punny jokes" as a child. And i miss those days.

If we were at EPCOT, and a question arose, we would address it or deflect it, depending on the kid's ages . No big deal.

I think "drinking around the world" or any of the various "crawls" that go on in Disney are really fun and I like them. On the other hand, I just think it's stupid to advertise that you are out drinking. Just reeks of needing to be cool. But it's all part of the drinking culture now (have you seen all the "wine" themed t-shirts and whatnot sold in every store) and the "look at me" culture.

Still, a kid isn't going to know that the wording on the shirt is cute or if it glorifying excessive drunkenness.
Like a pp said, it's a great intro to a conversation about adults engaging in drinking alcohol. It isn't illegal or immoral, there is no need to be embarrassed about being asked about it by a child and it doesn't really require some deep conversation, you just tell him that just like there are special treats for kids, there are special treats for grown-ups.

On a side note, I was curious about these shirts and there are some really cute ones on Etsy. I saw several that my dd would have loved if we went to WDW for her 21st birthday like we planned. I even saw one that I would wear, and it had a matching version for dh. It would probably be the only way I could get him in a Disney T-shirt :lmao:

Exactly, I don't see the harm, although I personally would not wear one (unless it was to humor my SIL or something if we were doing a family trip). I feel like this should be a pretty easy one to explain to kids no need to make it a bigger deal than it is.

Speaking only for me, I was not coming at it in regards to how it may affect children. I do not think it would scar them and I don't think it's all that big of a deal. I, personally, do not really like anything that holds up excessive drinking as a source of pride or accomplishment. I understand "excessive" may be relative, but staggering, slurring, bloodshot eyes, etc. - those visible queues of drunkenness like you might see on one of these t-shirts - is about where it is I think.

Just because someone likes to drink doesn’t mean they’re a drunk. Most people know how to control themselves, at least as far as I’ve seen at WDW. So if they want to wear a gimmicky shirt, so be it.

I think it's the gimmicky shirts that imply they will not control themselves -whether they actually do or not - that some find tacky. And that's all it is - just tacky. I've seen plenty of tacky non-drinking related shirts around in the parks as well. It's not about some deep, philosophical disagreement, just an eyebrow raiser.

I live in NOLA so I’m not bothering trying to shelter my child from the drinking culture. But I do think it’s trashy & would never wear one. But I don’t care what other ppl do.

I don't have a problem with it. I may have participated in wearing one of these a time or too as well....
