What do you think of people financing.....

I think it's crazy to go into major debt over a wedding. DH and I did put quite a bit of ours on our credit card, but we knew we'd be able to pay it off within 2 years or less, and we are on track to do just that. We also already bought a house, as well, so we were not in a situation where we had to pick between a wedding and a house. Our wedding, while very, very nice, still cost waaaaay less than the national average and the regional average for our area. We didn't go the cheapest route, but we didn't go even close to the most expensive route, either. Looking back, I do wish we had charged even less, but on the whole I think we did okay. I loved our wedding and wouldn't change a thing about it! I beleive we paid around $15,000, including our honeymoon. Not all of that went on the credit cards, of course!

I've heard of weddings in the New York area topping $100,000, sometimes as much as $200,000. I've heard a lot of couples in that area are just doing destination weddings to save money, since it is "socialy unacceptable" to have an in-town wedding on the cheap. That is just insane. Unless you're a millionare, I just don't understand it. Even if I had the money, I don't know if I'd spend it just on a single day! But to each their own, if you want to spend $100,000 for your dream wedding, knock yourself out. I still think it's crazy to go into debt for that much, but if you have the cash to pay for most or all of it laying around, hey, then it's your money!

Can we all just post our opinions on what we think about it??

But, my honest opinion IS that it's none of my (or anyone elses) business what or how anyone pays for anything.

I could care less whether a wedding costs $45 or $45,000. I could care less whether someone paid cash, took out a loan, or had someone else pay for it.

I'm surprised that so many ARE concerned about what others do and how they do it. Personally, I have more important things to worry about--things that directly affect me and my family.

My dad used his GM credit card for my wedding. It was about $6000. It was a big, nice wedding, I just saved money for him everywhere I could. He had 0% interest for six months, so it was paid off about a month after my wedding. The next year my brother got married in Austin. Over half of the guest were from out-of-town. So my dad invited everyone to the rehearsal dinner. He paid for it the same way. The year after that he took all points he had gotten from the GM card and bought my step-mom a new Suburban. :thumbsup2

My opinion IS that it is none of my business. Got enough trouble holding down my own fort.

There's no tradition of parents paying for weddings in my family. We were on our own and kept if very affordable. We were able to buy a house within 7 motnhs and I love equity more than debt...:)

All during my adolesence, I had to hear about my Dad's co-workers who spent gobs of money on their daughters' weddings. Some went into debt, others raided retirement funds, etc. I heard about these when the marriages fell flat and the Dads had to shell out even more money to pay for divorces. These anecdotes were usually part of Dad's 'learn from the mistakes of others' speeches, which covered getting educated, avoiding debt, not rushing into marriage, etc.

I am the person you see paying for McDonalds with my credit card, but it is my bank card being put through as credit. I get points everytime I use it as a CC, so I use it instead of cash every chance I get.

Sorry, but I think you completely missed the point. I said people who you know have huge credit card debt paying for fast food with a credit card.
