What do you think of my ticket theory?

Some friends and I are going to WDW next December for 4 days. DH and I are DVC members and could get the AP at a discount. However, does it make more sense to buy a 10 day PHP with no expiration as I don't really know if we'll be going back within the 365 day covered by the AP? I know we'll be going back some time but just don't know when. I feel that since prices go up every year, perhaps the smart thing to do is purchase a 10 day at today's price.

Please give me your opinions....

Thanks

I agree, we are going at the end of February 2006 and 2007. I just bought 10 day PHP no expiration tickets.

We just did it. Went in October and had planned to purchase the three-day ticket, but instead chose to upgrade to a seven-day ticket so that our next trip is already paid for. The CM tried to talk me into the Season Pass until I explained why. Would have gone for the 10-day ticket, but they said the max on the FL resident tickets was 7 days.

Five day trip in 2 weeks, but we bought the 10 PH with no expiration.

Thanks everyone. I think I will buy the 10 day. If I knew that we'd be going again before Dec '07, I could save a few bucks by going the AP way. But, we may bank our points towards another cruise.

We are in the same position. We've decided to purchase the 10 day no expiration to last us 2 trips. I don't know about you, but as DVC owners we don't go to the parks as much as we used to. We definitely don't do commando anymore. So AP without Pleasure Island, DQ and other things didn't fit our needs :)

I bought 10 day premium park hoppers, no expiration, with 5 "plus" visits.

The way I figure it, we should be able to swing 3 vacations out of this deal!!

Definitely try to get the mousesavers monthly newsletter link for ticket bargains, you will save some good money...

We had the same problem and I ended up buying the 10 day MYW no expiration last January, we used 2 days in February, and are going in a few weeks again. I was thinking of upgrading to AP's with thd DVC discount, ( mostly because I want to get the DDE card) but will be really bummed if we don't get back within a year, then I will have nothing, while with the MYW's I will probaly have 2 nights left. Plus I have old PHP's with 3 pluses left.

I think this is going to be my new strategy for my children as well. We've had APs for the last two years, but now that I have an almost college student, the girls will be on two different schedules for all vacation time. It makes more sense to me to keep a 10 day ParkHopper no exp. for each girl, and use the days as we need them, knowing that on some trips I might have one girl, and then take the other another time. I'll keep my AP, though - so I'll have the best of both worlds!!!

We purchased 10 day PHP with no expiration in July 2005. Then we went back in Oct. and upgraded to annual passes with the DVC discount. We are going in January 2006 for 7 days and then again in June 2006 for 12 days. So, it was no question that it was worth it for us to upgrade to the annual pass. We will get our money back just in what we save using the DDE card.

But, now we want to go back for Christmas next year and our annual passes will be expired. I'm going to get 10 day PHP with no expiration again for that trip because we don't forsee going back in 2007. (The December trip will use all of our 2007 DVC points!)

But by the time we go back, probably in 2008, we will be ready for another annual pass and will upgrade what is left of our 10 day passes to annual passes again!

Point being, you can always upgrade your none-expiring tickets at a later time if you find that you will want to go back!

I was told that when you trade up the remains of an MYW more than 14 days from first usage towards the purchase of an AP you are short rated rather than pro-rated. In other words the exchange rate is not very good.

I'm not absolutely sure but at least ask for the trade up value and step out of line and think about it before going ahead with the trade up.

But you could start using a non-expiring MYW pass, set it aside and buy an AP for some intervening vacations, and come back three years later to continue using the MYW pass.

*Short rated: The formula somebody quoted was that you start with gate price, deduct the cost of a base ticket for the days used (day #1 loses about $65., day #4 loses about $14., day #9 loses about $4.) and also deduct the pro-rated amount of hopping and non-expiration etc. and the trade up value is what remains. One day remaining would have about $20. trade up value.
