What do you think about this.

I work at a department store in a local mall. Several of the stores have closed and nothing has moved in.

We are told by management that our store is not closing at all and they have put in millions in improvements, as "proof".

However, I am asked several times a day if we are closing. Not only is there rumors flying around, but the rumor is the same. The rumor is that the Colts have bought up the area. The mall is not renewing leases, and some have even said we will be closing in april.

Now, we get stock in all the time, so much so that at the moment we are having a hard time figuring out what to do with it.
I know of lots of places that have done improvements and then turn around and closed.

But again, April is too close. I know we won't be closed by then, it may be possible that they will announce it's closing then though.

And, yesterday, one of the managers at our morning meeting was making noise about what all we need to do to keep the store open.

All this adds up to me, is that I need to find another job.

I would have to agree with you, start looking for another job. :(

Hate to say it, Laurie, but just think of the TDS stores in your area and elsewhere you have read about here on the boards, here today and gone overnight.

It doesn't sound good, Serena. I'd be looking for another job, too

Doesn't sound too good.:( I'd start looking around if I were you. But I know what you mean about stores closing after they've done improvements. Happens around here sometimes too. Nothing is a sure thing anymore.

If you ride it out are you entitled to unemployment?

If you are 100% sure that leases are not being renewed then I think you might need to look for another job.
We have a fairly new mall here. Some of the stores did not make it but the spaces were leased to other stores. Not renewing a lease would worry me.

What mall are you talking about?

I'll answer that in a p/m if you are really interested.

Serena I have a friend who worked for JCPenny at Lafayett Square Mall here in Indy. We were totally shocked out of our knickers when they announced the store was closing. I felt so bad for her.
First she left Lazarus before they closed than the same thing happened with Pennys.
I do miss Penny's Salon terribly. Now I have to hunt down another beautician.
If I'm shopping for myself I rather not go there unless I stop at Ayres or Old Navy. Other than that I go down town or Greenwood.

Goodluck to you:D

Do you feel like doing something slightly sneaky? Find the name of the management company for the mall, call them and tell them you are interested in renting space and see what they say. You could even say that you are interested in something long term. You might be able to get a feel from the person you talk to. Just an idea.

Otherwise, I think you would be smart to start looking. HTH!
