DH wants crabcakes tonight for supper, but I have no idea what to serve with them. :confused3

Crab isn't exactly a diet staple in WI.

What do you serve as sides when you make crabcakes? :)

Cole slaw, corn on the cob and boiled red potatoes with parsley!

we prefer stuff like roasted asparagus or brussel sprouts and a small side salad. Sometimes we will do roasted potatos or something like that.

We do a big salad with crabcakes. Corn on the cob would be good also. I wouldn't do a starch since the crab cakes typically have some breading in it to bind it anyway.

Asparagus, or green beans, and red potatoes and parsley. No tartar sauce or cocktail sauce EVER!

There should NEVER be breading in a good crabcake. :scared1:

Blech! No tartar sauce!! :scared:

I guess corn on the cob is out, since we can't get it fresh.

I have potatoes, but not red.

Hmmm.

Take it from a native Marylander who learned to pick crabs at 3 years old, Snapppyd has it exactly right! What time is dinner? I won't be late!

Growing up on the eastern shore of Maryland and spending many a day with my grandparents crabbing, and then watching my Grandmother fry up the crab cakes, I think I can help.
Although my Mom Moms crab cakes were so good that we didn't even want to eat anything else but them, she always made us home made macaroni and cheese, cole slaw, and fresh green beans from their garden.
God rest her soul, she made the best crab cakes known to man. I've got the recipe, but I can't make them how she did. Must have been the love she put in them. Love you Mom Mom!

Uh oh...I'm doomed before I even start. :rotfl:

The saying in Maryland is "All Killer, No Filler!". All you should need to bind them is just a little bit of bread crumbs or ritz crakers ground up, and then maybe a Tbsp. of Mayo. A little yellow mustard adds a bit of tang too. Enjoy!

I want crab cakes tonight, too! BTW, wvjules, do you know whether the crab harvest is supposed to be good this year? We go "up north" several times each summer and we love to go to Pope's Creek or Solomon's Island.

More crabcakes? :) Vinegar coleslaw and some green veggie is all ways good.

Phew! Ok, I was going to use breadcrumbs. ;)

I was about to say don't forget the tartar sauce! :lmao: But I guess mayo would be good, if you hate tartar sauce... Whatever you do, at least have some lemon juice available!

How do you feel about frozen corn? I find it cooks up nice in a pan with olive oil.

Must haves: A roll or biscuits or cornbread - some kind of bread. Pickles (asst. varieties). Avocado, halved with little shrimps and lemon juice in it. Cole slaw. A green salad. (Okay, the avocado and shrimp probably aren't a "must have", but they're still very, very tasty.)

And of course my all time favorite "side" for crab cakes: Lobster!

They are thinking it should be a bit better than last year, and that wasn't bad at all. They seem to be making a bit of a comeback over the last few years. Never been to Pope's Island, but Solomons is a blast. You can get some monster steamed crabs in that area. The Wye river crabs are always big boys. Have fun!

Yeah, you're good. You have to use a little something to bind them, just don't want to overdo it--like a lot of restaurants like to do. Man I want some crabs now.
