What do you love and hate about your side by side fridge?

Hydster:

You have the fridge I want. When my son is through college, we will redo the kitchen and update all our appliances. This is at the top of my list.

I have a Kenmore side by side. It's plenty big. Pizzas and turkeys fit just fine.

While I've enjoyed having water and ice dispensers in the door, I won't do it again because ice tends to jam up in the dispenser. It's been great though for my kids. They tend to drink more water since they can access it so easily.

The one thing that I really don't like about the freezer area is that the shelves in the door are so small.

The only time that I had a problem with anything freezing on the refridgerator side was due to the kids hanging on the door which finally caused it to not seal correctly. Once a repairman came out and fixed it, everything has been fine.

I have plenty of room on the refridgerator side. But I think I will go with a bottom freezer next time (if I can afford it).

I have a Kenmore Elite and love the side by side. I can fit frozen pizzas in no problem. And nothing freezes in the fridge side. My freezer actually fits a ton of stuff. It may not be all organized and neat, but it's in there.

We are starting a kitchen redo. Right nowI have an Amana. I don't think the fridge shelves are wide enough.
But I love the ice in the door. I have two DD's and a cat and gerbils. I do not want the kids "gerbily" little hands in an ice bin.
So we are getting a Maytag Ice 2O for the new kitchen.
It has ice in the door -but freezer in the bottom. I am a little worried since it is new and I have not been able to find a ton of info on it -but I think we are going to take a risk on this one

I have a Whirlpool. It was the biggest one I could get. I love it for the most part. If money had not been an issue I would have gotten the one with the freezer on the bottom and two doors on top.

I can fit pizzas in my freezer and much more. My shelves are all adjustable and I have 3 drawers in the fridge. I love the shelves on the door for milk and the smaller bottles. The slide out shelves would have been a nice feature I now realize. The shelves on the freezer door are on the small side. I can fit glasses for chilling and frozen canned juices and small bags of stuff. I love the ice and water in the door but the tray dosen't come out for easy cleaning.

I went with all white appliances and I am still happy with that choice almost two years later.

We have a GE Monogram built in like a Subzero and love it. Because it is a built in, it is not as deep as other side by sides and is wider. We have no problem getting large pizzas in the freezer or the fridge. The only down side is the compressor is on the top and the design (which has been changed since we bought ours) dries out the hose for the water in the door and we have had to have it replaced twice. We bought the extended warranty on all of our appliances when we remodeled the kitchen so the cost of the repair of the hose has never been an issue.

Like:
Ice dispenser through the door. I use it all the time. Love always having fresh ice for my water. I don't use the water though because we have a water cooler.

Easier to find things. I grew up in a house with a traditional fridge and stuff was always getting lost in the back. The freezer only had one shelf and so you had to stack everything. I hated it. Plus I am tall, so the side by side is nice because more things are eye level. Also, there are more shelves on the door so you can organize/store condiments and things easier.

Hate:
The freezer isn't wide enough. Cannot fit a pizza or any bulk items in there. I have to take the pizza out of the box and tape the directions to it in order for it to fit.

The ice machine takes up a lot of room on the freezer side.

I hope to eventually get a second refrigerator for my garage that is the standard kind to have more space. That way I can keep my kitchen fridge nice and organized, but still have plenty of space for larger things.

We bought one a couple of years ago cause DH just had to have it, I didn't want one at all. It was a Kenmore, the biggest they had. It stayed 2 days and DH called Sears to return it. Went back to Freezer on top, Fridge on bottom. We hated the lack of Fridge space. We have a freezer in our garage so what we really needed was just a fridge.

I have a Figidaire S/S Professional Series side by side, counter-depth.

I like its looks and the price (it had a gouge inside and we got more than $1,000 knocked off of the price).

I hate the fact that a counter-depth doesn't hold that much. We had to have one due to space constraints, and it has taken some getting used to.

Here's the only photo I took of it during the remodel: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/smbnobles/detail?.dir=669c&.dnm=579d.jpg&.src=ph

We're looking at the new Ice 2o and like the extra door inside that can keep the milk 4 degrees colder and the large deli tray drawer. And I like the freezer on the bottom as well, oh and the vacation mode :) Not sure what we'll end up getting, but this one caught my eye (and would catch a large chunk of my wallet too :( )

I'm not sure of the brand. I think it may be a Kenmore. It came with the house.

I absolutely hate that fridge! Like others have said we can't even fit a pizza box in the freezer. The freezer is deep and and that makes it hard to organize. Everytime we came back from the store we had to be creative to get everything in the freezer. It had to be reorganized each time.

We ended up buying an upright freezer, so now we don't have to worry about how much frozen stuff we buy.

The refrigerator part works fine, but I sometimes wish it were a little wider. It doesnt' freeze things like others have said.

I like our Frigidaire. The best thing is the ice/water in the door. Can't say that I really hate anything about it. I would certainly buy another one like ours(hopefully not for a long time). :)

We have a Kenmore french door (fridge w/2 doors on top, freezer on bottom) after years of having a side by side. I'll never go back to a side by side ever again, especially since the french door models have come down in price so much.

I did see a Maytag french door model just released that has ice in the door as well as water--no other model has that yet. I wasn't too impressed with it though because the ice maker caused you to lose a good amount of space in the fridge & the door itself.

I love how I can fit a large pizza box in my fridge. Everything's at eye level so there's no more losing things in the back of the fridge or in the drawers.

Love: water and ice dispenser on the outside and the ease of taking out the glass shelves to clean them.
Hate: virtually everything else. Not enough space on the refrigerator side. No matter how I set the controls, the veggie drawer stuff freezes.
I agree with this wholeheartedly.

I hate my side by side.

The next fridge I get will be a fridge on top freezer on bottom model.

DON'T BUY A SIDE BY SIDE FRIDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, I HATE side by sides! I'll never own one again. There's never enough space in the freezer. If I move, it better have the other style. :teeth: Sooooooooooooooo glad to have the top and bottom on this one. Of course, I bought it when I moved in. ;)

I keep looking at fridges because my will probably be going soon. The only problem I am having is that the only ones that are available is the side by side and the freezer on the bottom. I really don't want the side by side and the freezer on the bottom is not really practical and I really couldn't live with it. What a pain. Because I am really vertically challanged the bottom freezer doesn't work. I would be able to get into the freezer no problem but the fridge would be useless from the middle of it up to the top. Right now my freezer on the top is hard but I don't have to get into it as much as the fridge.

Yea, the Ice 2o said it's actually a French Door, not a side by side so I think we'd be fine. And truthfully I can't tell you the last time we bought a frozen pizza so that wouldn't be an issue. If we order out, there usually isn't enough pizza left to justify storing it in the box, so again...not an issue. But, I think it would work out better for us....or at least better than our current tiny little fridge.

My SIL just moved in to a new home and bought a nice side by side stainless steel fridge and it's HORRIBLE! She even said that she hates it, it just doesn't hold anything. It was awful at Thanksgiving trying to put all the leftovers up.

I HATE mine. I think it is a Whirlpool, came with the house. It is just too narrow to fit anything. I want the french door with the freezer on the bottom!!!! I do like the ice maker but that is about it.

I hated ours..got rid of it and bought the regular one with the freezer on the top...I am MUCH happier with that one! With the side by side I couldn't fit anything in the darn thing!

We have a side-by-side with the ice and water on the outside in our kitchen and a traditional refrigerator in our laundry room. So I really don't have any complaints because I have all of the space I need.

So, if you have the room and can swing it, I wholeheartedly recommend having both, LOL.
