What do you drink on the flight over?

I suffer really bad with this, sorry OP but I'm slightly hijacking your thread here :flower3:

Can I ask do you take a dissolvable Asprin?

You can or just chew the tablet. I find it helps to lay off too much salt as well for a couple of days. I have seen me taking off my shoes and by the end of the flight my feet are so swollen I can't get my shoes on again.

Like I said check with your GP some people can't take it for medical reasons.

Sorry again OP :goodvibes

I love reading about other people's holidays as it passes the time until my own comes around (still over a year away). I enjoy this type of question as it lets me share holiday experiences (however smaller part of the holiday it may be).

Back to topic, I only ever drink water on a flight - I rarely drink alcohol home or away and have to be careful of the sugar content in fruit juices and artificial sweeteners in diet drinks.

I'm also someone who can't drink anything fizzy. Last time I had a glass of sparkling water (it was Perrier) my legs swell and I retained all the liquids I drank. It took 2 days for CO2 and salt to get out of my system, and by that time I had put on 10lbs. (that's due to a condition of mine, pretty much undiagnosed as there is no name or category for my condition)
Can't have beer, sparkling wine, champagne either, no coke, no nothing, if it has bubbles in it, it's a big no-no

Aspirin helps because aspirin thins the blood. The conditions inside the plane and the fact that you remain seated for so long, tend to thicken the blood. So Aspirin really does help.

BUT and that's a HUGE BUT, you need to check with your doctor, because some conditions might be worsened by the Aspirin.

Taking the plane for me is a PITA. I need to wear compression stockings (2 layers on each leg, fullsize, not just socks) and I need to give myself shots of Heparin to avoid my blood vessels to get cloated and a thrombosis (always a "fun" time to go through TSA with a large box of seringes preloaded with liquid). The artificial pressure in the plane gives me acute headaches, and I need to take a mix of paracetamol mixed with codein or opium+cafeine. And these don't mix well with the pressure and alcohol.

That's why I'm sticking with water and juice

Lordy...your travel insurance must be nightmere to get! :scared1: It's bad enough for us with DH being a diabetic and just having a total hip replacement..:sad2:

I tend to try and keep away from fizzy stuff because I find it very addictive and it also bloats me but def not to your extent..

I know this is off topic also but hey...I was only saying to my DH an hour ago about how much flaming down goes on on the US boards..I think the UK boards are so much more friendly..I was looking at one US thread where the lady was flamed by loads of people and tbh I did think after reading her thread 'really, honestly you must be kidding' but as its been said above 'if you can't be nice don't say anything' just leave it and move on!

i regularly get flamed on the cruise line board....
part of the time it's my fault i think - i'm being tongue in cheek and they don't get it....but most of the time, someone jumps down my neck for absolutely no reason....sometimes i make the mistake of responding (in kind), but i try to ignore it...

I am with the other people who said if they drink fizzy its a nightmare. I swell up so badly. Permit me to go OT for a moment. I find that if you can take an aspirin before you fly it helps with the swelling. Though I would check with GP if you can do this.

If I want alcohol I have wine or a vodka and cranberry juice but overall I tend to stick to water. I buy a couple of those big bottles at the airport.

Once I get to my resort if I have not fallen asleep the minute I get to the room its off the the bar for a celebratory drink.

i can't eat or drink anything on a plane or i swell up like a balloon....my legs that is...
it took me years to figure out why my legs were so swollen and painful..
so now i don't eat or drink anything on board at all, other than plain bottled water....

And that is the other advantage of aspirin's blood thinning qualities if you can take it - it helps prevent thrombosis. No substitute for keeping your legs moving as much as you can etc but it helps :thumbsup2

As for drink, I will have an orange juice with lemonade, but only during the first half of the flight as it goes straight through and I could do without needing the restroom while waiting to clear customs / getting the car and luggage! In the second half of the flight i'm on water or diet coke/pepsi max.

oh - and i agree that the UK board is the nicest board on the dis!!!

i don't remember ever getting flamed on this board!!!! :thumbsup2

the nicest bunch of people around!!!! :goodvibes

Thanks, Guys! You're the best!!!

I'm going to try ginger ale - never had it; want to try it!!

The asprin thing is really intersting; will let DW know!!!

I find I have to take a couple of nurofen when I get up in the morning, whilst in Florida, otherwise the heat gives me a massive headache!

30 days to go!!!!!!

The advice above is not to be taken lightly

Aspirin is a medicine, it should be treated with respect even though it's so widely known and used that some could consider it to be harmless ... IT'S NOT

Don't take aspirin if you're bleeding (if you're a woman and have that "bad week" for example)
People with hemophilia or stuff like that should steer clear of aspirin.
and so many other condition that could make aspirin be dangerous to your health

consult your doctor

(I'm beginning to sound like those annoying disclaimers on meds ads on US TV ...) :rotfl:
but I would hate to hear that a fellow DISer got hurt because of random chat on our forum

absolutely - i'm not permitted to take aspirin, but it's still interesting to me that it's something people take before flying :)

OK you bullied me into asking:rotfl2:
Had an appointment this evening so I asked, I have been taking 75mg but he advised me to take 300mg.
He asked where we were going as I was leaving, he asked me to sit down again, turns out he is going in August to SSR with free DDP and wanted advice on making ADR's (I told him he is a little late:rotfl:)
At least I know my GP is in the next hotel if I have any problems on our last 5 days.:rotfl2:
