you go on vacation? We are thinking about adding another to our family as a playmate for Amos, English Bulldog and very UGLY.....but we have a difficult time finding someone to help watch him and some bullies have special needs that kennels can't accomodate.

My parents actually come over to our house to "live" with the dogs when we are gone. I know, I know. Their spoiledness is disgusting.

I board both of mine. Wow...does that get expensive!! I'll be going to VA for a week soon. I think I'll look into a friend staying with them. My home would be closer to her job, too. That might peak her interest! :)

Our dog goes to grandma's and the neighbor comes in and checks on the cat.

We used to have friends or family watch our mini dachshund but I always worried about what would happen if they cancelled at the last minute, etc. This past summer we found a kennel for her and we were very happy with them! We thought they were very reasonable too - about $9 a day. A co-worker of my husband's has used this kennel for years and his wife is VERY picky about her dog!

I know bulldogs can't take the heat - this kennel had a whole building of air-conditioned runs big enough for large dogs that need the A/C. Maybe you could check with bulldog breeders in your area - I bet they'd know which kennels have the best reputation!

That's funny ..... a breeder in the area. :P I wish I could find one. We bought our Amos from Bakersfield, CA last year. He was shipped on an airplane to us. Breeders are rare in this area, for that type of dog anyhow.

Very few people really understand that bullies can't be in the heat or they die from heat exhaustion, you can't really take them for walks or jogging and you have to calm them down if they get too excited. Sounds like a fun dog, huh? :o

We are fortuntate to have a good friend who loves to pet sit. If by chance, she's not available, we enlist the help of the teenage girl across the street (her Mom helps her and makes sure she keep up on the job). We not only need care for our dog but for our rabbit too - good thing the frog doesn't mind waiting to eat.

We compensate our teenage friend very well with a gift card. Our friend we always get something special for or send her something as thanks.

We tried the kennel route with our dog but it didn't work for us. He brought home flees. We had a terrible time getting rid of them -- I was pregnant at the time. The vet kept saying fumigate the house, the OB kept telling me I'd have to move out. Finally got rid of them by having our dog take a birth control pill -- even though he's a male. Stopped the fleas from producing.

I didn't reply to the poll because we do several different things depending on where we are going and how long we will be gone:

board at kennel
take him along
have relative come live at our house

I will be boarding my puppy for the 1st time next week. I'm very nervous about it and feeling rather guilty. I've already arranged to have my sister drop her off for me so I don't cry.

They go to Auntie Bevvie's, a local woman who cares for about 12 dogs a day on her ranch. They love it there. The little one even gets to sleep on her bed, just like at home.

We have a kennel full of dogs (8), so we have a house/dog sitter come and stay for the time we are gone. It would be very difficult to board them all.

My baby goes to stay at his grandman and grandpas house.

They love to babysit their granddog

My dog goes to my parent's house. He loves it there - they spoil him. The last time we went away he knew we were going because all of our suitcases were out and he couldn't wait to go to my parent's house - he stood by the door and when I asked him if he wanted to go and see Grandma and Grandpa he got so excited that we wound up bringing him over to them a little earlier than we needed to.

Our golden passed away this fall so until we get another dog it won't be an issue for us but when Shadow was here we used to leave her here at the house and have family and our neighbor drop by everyday and feed her, play with her some and generally just make sure everything was ok. Between my parents and my neighbor Shadow got enough care and attention but I still worried about her. We used to take her to my in-laws home and you'd think she'd like that better than staying home by herself but she never acted that way. She'd always be upset when we picked her up and not act like herself for a few days but when we would leave her at the house and have people come in to take care of her she acted like her regular self when we'd come home. I know my in-laws were good to her so I guess she was just a stay at home dog.

We board our dog. Our vet has a kennel and he's well loved there. If we lived near family, though, we'd have them watch him.

I used to be a pet/house sitter and I loved it. I wish I could find a few folk here, though I could only take in their pets. DH would be upset if I stayed away. lol

Our baby goes on a holiday too, to my Mum's. My bro still lives at home & our baby & him are soooo close:D

So, we take him up to their place, a couple of days before we head off & pick him up again the day we get home or the day after.

I take mine to a kennel that my Vet and a dog breeder recommended. The dogs (Mickey & Minnie-big suprise huh) love going there. They have runs next to each other and are taken out for playtime together twice a day.

When I take them out of the car to go into the kennel they literally pull me through the door. I think they enjoy going, kind of like camp for them. However, when I pick them up they are also happy to come home! :)
