Actually I have had an AP for a few years now and IMHO the paper (or tyvek) tickets are much better and last longer than the plastic. Because they are very sturdy (impossible to rip) but flexible they work better in the turnstyles and the fp machines. The plastic is thick and inflexible and they tend to get stuck.
The Disney Store is the only place to get MYW tickets that are plastic. If you are staying at a WDW Resort you can also have the tickets added to your room key which is also plastic but not as thick as the Disney Store plastic.

We always get APs, so I can't compare the plastic v. paper, but I can tell you the paper ones do rip. We've had to have them replaced before, and IN NO WAY were they abused. The CM told us it happens a few times a month. While that might be a relatively small number in the grand scheme of things, its a pain when it happens to you.
We've also had lots of problems with them reading in the machines for our second trip every single time (we go for 10 days once a year and always take two trips on the AP). They stay stored in the front pack, since it is only broken out for Disney trips and they are sure not to be lost or ruined, which in turn is stored in my

But you're right, they are better than just printer type paper. Still not what it should be for someone who uses it for an entire year though.
