What do you do to heat your Above Ground Pool?

I know, I know there is such a thing as a heater, , but they cost almost as much as the pool.

Anyone else had success with some other method of heating an above ground pool?

If you get a lot of sun the solar cover is going to be your best bet. I actually have a heater..I think it cost about 700.00..but that was maybe 10 years ago. I don't get enough direct sun in the yard to heat the water.


There is also some kind of solar fish things that I've been told work good but I have no idea what they are or how much they cost.

We to have the heater, and yes it was almost as much as the pool, but still cheaper than an in-ground pool and it does extend our swimming season which we need here in Western Canada.............we hardly even use our heater in the summer as we have a west facing back yard and get sun all day and with the solar cover it hardly gets turned on in June/July/August

When we had our pool, we used a solar cover. It did a bang up job.
Those little "fish" items that were supposed to help heat did nada.

We had a solar cover too, but I don't think our yard got enough sun for it to make much of a difference. If you have a sunny yard, a cover will probably help keep your pool warmer. We tried the fish and they didn't work for us either.

We have the solar blanket, plus we have two of the solar plastic heaters that we bought off Ebay. They're two long 3' x 20' (I think) black plastic strips that hooks up to the pool. The water runs through them & then goes back into the pool. They work great!

I have heard those work very well!

Solar fish - they help to maintain heat by cutting down on evaporation. In no way do they heat the pool. ( They have been selling this for over 30 years in gallon sizes, many water parks use it)

Solar Cover- also there to maintain heat. Take it off during the day when you get sun and the make sure to put it back on the pool at night to retain any of the heat that you collected during the day.

Heat pumps- very expensive but vey efficient.

Solar heater- If you have the space I thin this is the best way to go. ( Stay away from the bubble heater or panels). The best one are 20 ft in lenght. You can buy ones that are 2 ft or 4 ft across. They run around 129 to start.

Gas heaters- expensive, inefficient but give you imediate heat

Also if the pool is not yet installed (or you are replacing a liner) add wall foam.

We bought a heater and it was the best investment. Our water is heated quickly. We cover it at night with the solar cover and we hardly use the heater the rest of the summer. Last summer was a cold one here in Ohio. WE used our pool everyday, my neighbor hardly used hers at all...it was much too cold.

I have another neighbor with the solar panels, her water is very warm also...of course it takes longer to heat up initially but she swears by her panels.

This will be our second year with our pool. We have two solar panels (4x20) along with a solar cover that I'm waiting to be delivered...just ordered yesterday.

The solar panels definitely help. Last year we used one and this year we bought the second one. Figured between those and the cover it should help quite a bit.
