I know I have asked this before but with such a large group of people I am sure there are jobs out there that I never even thought of.....

I need a new profession...what do y'all do and how do you like it? Pro's and con's....

Thanks
Christina

First and foremost I am a Mom but next I am a clinical social worker who works on the victim's services team. I love what I do. It can be tough work but that is why I go to the beach or to WDW to avoid burnout! Pixie dust to you.....

I am an after hours answering service operator. We answer for doctor's offices, lawyer's offices, plumbers, heating and a/c people, home health agencies, etc.... We also take some companies order lines after hours. We are nation wide. I may have talked to some of you! We also answer for alot of resorts in Hilton Head South Carolina. It is a very interestng job. I learn alot and get to talk to many different people after hours.

I'm an office manager for an Oral Surgeons office. The job itself isn't bad but in my particular office there are two doctors and it can be a problem trying to deal with both of them. They don't agree on much of anything so I get stuck in the middle :( . I can recommend the job if you really like working with people and have the ability to be nice even when they are mean, nasty, frustrating, or sorry to say, nut jobs.

I work for an Administrator at a High School.

We are extremely busy during the school year, but we are also required to work Summers (which go by extremely slow) with not much to do.

Pay is ok (could be better, we are working on our new contract) 18 sick days, 13 holidays, 2 weeks+ vacation and 3 personal days per year. Pension (which I hope exists when I need it).

All in all it is a good job . . .I'm just bitter cause I wanted to be a SAHM . . . :o

Retail sales at a department store.

I run the cash register and deal with the stock, unpacking, markdowns and all.
My feet are finally used to being on them for 9 hours straight.
The only thing I don't like is that I have to not only put up with some rude customers, but I have to be helpful, kind, courteous and smile while I do it.
But it can be fun.

Im a stay at home mom.
In a former life I worked in banking...first as a bookkeeper and then a "Deposit Services Representative"(aka Operations).

Thanks for all the responses... I have no idea what I want to do, I just know this isn't it....

I want to work Monday through Friday, days.....
I like working with people but I don't want like working sales, or "crisis management" when you are always working with people who are upset.. think insurance claims.
I love working with kids.... but I need to make at least $30000 a year....

any ideas of careers that i may not be aware of????

THanks,

Christina

24/7 I am a mom. But in addition to that my dh and I sell on ebay and we love it. We buy things cheap (hopefully) and resale them for profit (hopefully). It something you have to have a bit of money to start with so you can get some inventory, but we work at home in the loft between the kids bedrooms and and I am always available to help or talk to. I would never be able to work a job that I had to go somewhere and answer to a boss. Before we did this hubby had a home stereo business when I met him and I joined in and for several years we installed home theater systems for mostly stinking  rich people in new houses (they sometimes spent almost $100,000 on some systems). As the economy got bad less and less people wanted the expense of whole house music or top end equipment so we started to look elsewhere. My mom has HUGE amount of collectibles in storage so thats where we started, by putting them up for sale on ebay and were floored by how much money they were bringing in. It evolved into a business.

Another SAHM here. But that's only been for the past 15 months. In my former life, I was the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Engineering on a major contracted defense fighter aircraft. Before that, I was Administrative Assistant to 3 V.P.'s at a major brokerage firm in Beverly Hills, CA. My last job though was part time medical biller for rehab services at a hospital & then I became caregiver to my terminally ill Mother & SAHM. I've enjoyed all my jobs over my lifetime but the SAHM job has been the most rewarding, as well as the only one that doesn't pay in anything tangible!

I'd like to find something I could do from home so that I can continue to be home with my 2 y/o (& for when my 8 y/o comes home from school) as well as make a little $$. I miss working! (Can you believe anyone said that?! :earseek:  )

Good luck in finding your dream job!

I am a Medical Research Associate, working as a Chemist primarily, at a large Hospital/Med School in Boston. I've done this type of work for 15+ years now.

Although I have a Psych degree I used my Bio background in the workplace. Eventually, I did go back to Grad School at night to continue my Bio education also. I ended up working as a Chemist by chance mostly since that was the last thing I thought I'd be doing as a career even though I always loved lab work.

As for my Psych degree I joke that I use it to analyze my  co-workers and that I am earning my Psych PhD this way. :p I did work a part time, volunteer job once as a greeter within the ICU/CCU waiting room. That very often required me to use my counseling skills to calm and talk to visitors to the units.

I am a former secretary turned waitress and I LOVE it!! I've been waitressing in a great family-oriented restaurant for 7 years now. I work about 40-hours for a 2-week pay period and make about $15,000 per year, so in theory if you worked a 40-hour week you could double that and hit the $30,000 per year you are shooting for. Some shifts I make $100 (4-5 hour shift), some only $30 or $40, it just depends on how busy we are so you can't "depend" on big tips every shift. But it averages out to a good number. And with only working about 20 hours per week I still have a lot of time for my family and home.

I was never really a "people person" but have learned to be. ;)
And it's basically a stress-free job, except for the occasional rude customer but thankfully those are far and few between.

The only down-side is no benefits - no insurance, no sick pay, no vacation pay, etc. Some places might offer that to full time employees though.

Thank you for all the responses.

As far as background I now work in ins. claims and before this I was a restaurant manager. I used to waitress and in order to make the money that I would need to I would have to work all weekends and I can't do that anymore....

I feel like there should be a great job out there for me, but I can't even narrow down my interests to find something so I have no idea what to do.....

I am an occupational health nurse and work for a large company. I do what the school nurse does, promote wellness programs, flu shot programs, and deal with company safety issues. It is a great job. I work 40 hours per week and enjoy every moment. The up side is that I work no weekends or holidays. The down side, if there is one, is that I have to plan to be sick. I can't call in unless I can find someone to cover for me. The same is true of vacation time.

Dawnct... what training do you have to be an occupational nurse?

How about Veterinary technologist or something to that effect?

Can you tell I am all over the place?

You need to be a registered nurse first. There are two and four year programs for nursing. After that you can specialize in the area of nursing that you find interesting.

Before I had kids I was the Costume Jewelry Buyer for a chain of dept. stores. Now I work as a Kindergarten teacher's aide- very physically demanding, but I do love it, plus I am home when my kids are:D I also work p/t for a national dept. store selling jewelry- what can I say, it's in my blood:D

I work for a title insurance company doing real estate settlements. I hate it. I have a wonderful boss, she truly is like a 2nd mother to me, I have been there for 15 years so basically I did grow up with her LOL...but I am just burned out of the job itself. I has been a crazy few years and this past year with refinances it was insane. But the realtors I deal with are just....well I can't really say what I am thinking...but I think rude comes to mind. I really do not mean to offend anyone, my mother is a realtor, but just not rude LOL. I just get so upset when people just have no regard for others. :( Sorry this turned into such a rant LOL..it was not my intention, I just got started and could not stop LOL!

Every day I look at the WDW Jobs page and someday....I am going to respond to one of those posts, I just know it! :earsgirl:

Good luck with your career change!
