Ive been going to the Community Center and doing Group Power weight class about 5x/wk for about a month now. Instructor is suggesting that I give myself a day in btwn for the muscles to recover.
Because I had foot surgery 10wks ago I cant do the Step classes. Yes they have Pilates (which Ive tried) and Core & More (havent tried). I do Basic training class Thurs mornings.
I want more though if Im going to cut out 2 Group Power classes. Wondering what I can do instead?
They do have 8 cybex weight machines (but again its weights), eliptical, bike and treadmills (which I have done). Guess Im looking to get myself into a gym routine but not sure what to do.

What do you do at your gym?

I do weights every other day and I do cardio 5 days a week which I do on different machine my favorites are the tread climber and the crossramp

I do a little of everything (ok, a lot of everything...:lmao: )

Run = 25 miles per week
Bike = 1 or 2x/week @ 15 miles each
Elliptical = 1 or 2x/week for 60 minutes
Strength train (weights) = 2x/week
Boxing class = 1x/week (best cardio workout ever as well as upper body work!)
Tennis = 2x/week

Basically, I do two activities per day. For example, I might run in the morning and play tennis in the evening. Or run then follow that up with strength training, etc. I didn't start out at this level, though. I am just OCD that way! :rotfl2:

Seriously, if you can do the elliptical, do that for sure. You want to have a good balance of cardio and strength training. Always keep mixing it up.

Weight training is awesome, but you need to balance it out with a good cardio session 4 or 5 times per week imo. You can get away with 3 times per week. I'm a fitness instructor and I agree with the advice you've been given, you really need to give your muscles recovery time...preferably 48 hours but at least every other day only of weight training. I also feel that core work is essential...as a Pilates Instructor I believe it's as important as weight training.

The reason cardio is so important is that it burns fat most efficiently. Just remember to stay in the cardio zone...anything such as spin class, elliptical, running, biking, etc will do the trick.

Good luck and let us know what you've decided on!!!

I run three days a week
pilates 1 or 2 times a week
1 weight lifting class

Plus I walk at least 30 miles a week and I do 3 hours of wii fit.

I have to add more weights, but right now I am having fun with wii fit, so it has taken the place of other stuff

I try to get to the gym at least 5 times a week. I usually do the elliptical machine for 40-60 min, after some weights. I also like to bike or take spin class. I also try to get to yoga or pilates. I find varying my workouts works best for me.
