Houston has some rather nice counter service restaurants that I don't consider to be fast food. Pei Wei is a counter service version of PF Changs and Amazon Grill is a counter service version of Churrascos. They are not real cheap - I think the highest entre at Amazon Grill is $16. Great places for lunch!!
If I don't have a menu at the table and they don't come to me to take the order, then it's fast food.
Also, if there's a drive up window it's fast food.
I thought about it for a minute and decided the determining factor - if I bus my own table I consider it fast food ( I always bus my own table if there are trash cans out for this purpose like at McD's). For example we go to a pizza place where I order at the counter, pick up my pizza at the counter, but leave our garbage on the table - I don't consider it fast food. I also don't consider a buffet fast food even though I get my own food and it is immediate.
I admit though that I also consider take out and grocery deli food fast food - and I have to clean that up myself. I guess I blew my own theory.
What is fast food? Something that unfortunately we are eating way too much of lately due to all of our schedules. Between 14 yr. old dd's schedule and 2 sons and a husband having games or practices every day/night it makes it hard to cook and I love to cook!
Anyone familar with Cafe Express? Do you consider it fast food? I think there is a niche of new counter service restaurants that are causal but not "fast food". Much more expensive that ff, but you order and pay at the counter. I like these new places but rarely eat traditional fast food. I think there is likely a big market for these casual, counter service restaurants.
