Around here they are mostly refereed to as sprinkles but I have heard them called jimmies too, western NY area.

I grew up ( Dallas TX) calling them sprinkles but when I buy them at the store depending on the brand , I will see them packaged as Jimmies

Growing up, the colored ones were called Sprinkles and the chocolate ones were called Jimmies. Don't ask me why. I grew up in Baltimore, MD. DH calls them all Sprinkles.

Lived in NJ, CT and MA (now)....

In NJ = Sprinkles
In CT = Shots
In MA = Jimmies

When I first worked at Dunkin Donuts, it was pretty confusing! :)

When my best friend's nephew was visiting from Lousiana, she thought she'd be a good aunt and and take him for ice cream. When she asked him if he wanted 'jimmies' on his cone he got the most horrified look on his face that she had ever seen. He thought she was offering to put 'man parts' on his ice cream! :rotfl: Apparantly, they call them sprinkles in Baton Rouge.

My family says sprinkles, but some containers at the stores here say jimmies.

They are sprinkles here BUT I did know about them being called jimmies, I think.

I've just never ever heard anyone use that term around here. I might look at them a little perplexed but it might sink in what they were asking for.

It's so funny all the different things stuff is called all through the USA. I know some people from other countries tend to ask 'what do you call X?' if they are going to visit but sometimes I think we need to do that within our own borders!!!

I remember my sister telling me the first time she was shopping I think in Virginia & asked someone where the pop was...they looked at her like she was crazy! That's when she realized they call it soda.

For that matter, one time in a store in Southern IL, we asked if they had straws because we couldn't find them -- we got a funny look & the person asked if we meant drinking straws? (Umm..yeah...I hadn't even thought about the other kind of straw being sold at the store!) I've never referred to them as "drinking straws" before.

Edited to add: I live a sheltered life as I didn't know the OTHER meanings for jimmies. I've never heard it used in that context either! Back under my rock I go... ;)

multi-colored = sprinkles
chocolate flavored = jimmies

two totally different things

Sprinkles! Born in TN raised in Yankeeville South Florida, now in NC, they've always been sprinkles.

Like the OP from Minnesota - Sprinkles. Born and raised in Iowa...never heard of jimmies OR what that might have meant besides sprinkles!!!!

:)::)::):)

grew up in Somerset County NJ and now live in Middlesex County. I have always called them sprinkles

Chocolate = Jimmies

Colored = Sprinkles

I think. I don't usually like either, but if I had to get one or the other it would be Jimmies. ;)

(Jimmies are a staple at Brigham's. "In Boston, JIMMIES are to ice cream like mustard & relish are to a hot dog.")

Yup yup yup :cool1:

I'm from NJ and they are sprinkles. They are sprinkles regardless of there make up - chocolate, rainbow, single random color - they are still sprinkles. We make fun of the people that call them jimmies :rotfl:
