What do you buy for an 8 yo girl?

Maybe I'm the odd one out, because I've only seen this mentioned by one of the PP's, but how about a book set? 8 is a great age when usually they are really getting into chapter books and reading comprehension is a fast growing skill. I know a few girls in this age range and they love the Diary of a Wimpy kid books, Clarice Bean and things like that. If she has everything, I just don't think you can have enough books, but maybe I'm old fashioned? With your budget you could get her a really nice set of 3-5 books of a series to get her started and then those can be added onto by you or others on birthdays, other holidays, etc... You should also have enough left over to add a Monster High doll, craft set, or whatever other item you think she'd like.

Do you think a little gift box with a whole bunch of "cute" little things would be all right? I'm always afraid that it looks a little cheap. On the other, hand, I would be sure she would like the stuff. Every girls needs hair accessories and socks. I know mine are always running out.

I think if you set it up nicely it won't look cheap. These girls love sparkly wrapping paper, fancy tissue paper and ribbons. Look on etsy for maybe some hand made hair ties if you don't like the store brands. Look for fancy girly fun socks in stores, maybe some of those individual toe socks. With the craft kits I buy I make sure I really make them look pretty and wrap each thing separately. Wrap the coloring book, wrap the color pencils , wrap the glitter glue, wrap the pom poms, wrap the googly eyes. Things like that. Basically make each item special! You can even go online and seek out little how to projects like making snowmen out of the pom poms and print that out along with the accessories to make them. Don't limit yourself to just putting everything in a box and wrapping it. Craft stores carry $1-3 wicker baskets for example that can be used to hold things. The girls I gift these things would use the basket as a "shopping basket" for pretend play.
